92 Acura Integra - Good deal? Update: 89 Integra

I've been looking for a car for quite awhile now, but recently have been searching much more intensely. Picked up a full time job at CompUSA, and I'll also be doing part-time driving for an upscale pizza place (something to the tune of 60 hours per week combined :Q) both of which I'll be starting in about two weeks. I plan on working really long hours this spring/summer and, then using the money I save for night computer classes, this fall. I'll most likely drop the Pizza job at that time ...

Anyway, I'm seriously considering offering $3500 on the following car:

Black 92 Integra GS

contigent on what the mechanic says. Of course, I'm not going to buy if the mechanic finds a major problem, or forsees one. It has a lot of miles, 128K ... but has had only two owners. The current owner has had it for 5 years, and 70,000 miles. The man is in his mid-60s, and seems to be a very responsible person. He would have continued driving it, but his company provided him with a Brand new 2002 Acura. (talk about benefits!) The test drive was awesome ... it's a strong yet smooth ride, and extremely roomy. The handling is supurb (like heaven when compared to my parent's car) ... oh yea by the way, this will be my first car!

So my question, what do you think I should do? If it checks out with my mechanic, should I go for it?

UPDATE! The 92 Acura may not work out (it's a long story) ~ but when browsing the Tribune classifieds, I came up with a 1989 Acura Integra. Yes it's old, but the car has only 81,000 miles, is in excellent condition, and has a sunroof in addition to it's standard features. It's completely spotless in and out, except for slight rust in the rear wheel wells. The couple is selling it, because her company provided them with a brand new Ford Taurus. Yea, I know it's an old car - but Integras are known for their bulletproof engines and often last over 250 thousand miles with regular maintenence. They're asking $2700 (can be negotiated) Good deal? I think so!!

Sounds like a reasonable deal to me. From the picture it would appear at first glance that he took care of it. At least it was owned by someone responsible, and not some kid who drove the crap out of it.

If it checks out at the mechanic, offer him $3,500.00.

<< According to Kelly Blue Book, that's a great price even if the car is only in "Fair" condition. >>

and I'd have to rate it somewhere between good and excellent. There are some very minor scratches, and some damage spots on the hood ... probably from small rocks, but otherwise the exterior is gorgeous. Although the interior has some marks, it's in better then "Good" condition. From what I've heard, the car could possibly go well over 200,000 miles with only minor fixes.

🙂

<< fun to drive but not so overpowered >>

Overpowered? That's never the case with your common Honda 😀 Heheh, If you really want the car, go for it, sounds like a great deal considering the milage

I have a 1990 Integra LS. Bought at 185k miles and now it has 196k miles. Runs strong and smooth. Personally, it's a great car and will last long.
$3500 is an excellent price for the car. Go for it!

normally a 10 year old car i'd say no, but its a honda, an acura at that, and that model of integra is pretty bulletproof.

That wouldn't be too bad. See if they laugh in your face if you offer $2000.

That version of the Integra is even more fun to drive, cuz it's so light and small. Think of an '86 Civic Si with an even more powerful, rev-happy engine. That little 1.6 DOHC sounds sweet as it revs to 7000 RPM.

I've seen those with 200,000+ miles on them. I don't know of any specific issues with that generation, but hey, I'm sure that like most Hondas, if you take care of it, it'll take care of you.

Thanks for all the great advice Garfang! I figure $2500 or less will be a very good deal, especially if the car lasts me 200k+ 🙂 Of course, I may save up and buy something newer, long before the car gives out.

I got a 1990 integra LS and it is a nice first car and drives well. Revs to 6500 rpm but i find the gearing to be way to short, my only gripe. I dont like being in 4th at 55km/h!!!!
has 240,000 km on it and runs like a champ. the 1.8 are bulletproof engines, but if your going to buy an integra, the most important is body rust, dont buy it with rust on it cause it will just spread. the 2nd generation (90-93) in my opinion are the best lookign integras
