New 90nm graphics processor units (GPUs) from ATI Technologies and Nvidia, with ATI?s flagship R580 chip and two 7xxx series from Nvidia, are expected to enter mass shipments by the end of the first quarter of 2006, according to Taiwan-based graphics card makers.

This could be one reason for the absence of any 7800GS card if they plan to introduce the 7600 in the same timescale as they phase out the 6800GS (I assume the 7600 and 6800GS cost a fair bit less to make than a 7800GS).

It'll be very interesting if they get R580 out on time (end of first quarter 2006 is around Cebit time I think, and sounds a lot more realistic than a January release:p)

The R580 has been on the January 2006 timeline for quite awhile. If the R520 hadn't had those issues and came out in May the January/February release would seem normal. We will see, if the R580 comes out and Anandtech's speculation is correct Nvidia will need something faster than the 7800GTX 512 to compete at the high end. MMM FX-60 watercooled with R580 or 7800GTX 512. Oh dreams of love how sweet the grit is the sand between my ... errr ... excuse me.

ATI?s next-generation flagship GPU, the R580, which the graphics chip vendor expects to release in January of 2006, should actually start shipping at the end of the first quarter, the makers noted.

Sounds like more paper from ATI... <sigh>

Why can't they just wait until they actually have parts before they release them? The January timeline did sound a bit too good to be true. End of Q1 makes more sense for R580, and I imagine that NV will have a competing chip around the end of Q2.

Well from what ATi have said even tho if it might be iffy. the R580 had no problems like the R520 and it was taped out months ago. So rom that i guess they are just building up stock right now. It seems reasonable.

The R520 missed its launch time by months because of the problems in the manufacturing process. But the R580 had none of those problems and has steadily moved along. From what ive read it seems reasonable that the R580 will make its deadline.

The quote pretty clearly says that they will launch in Jan and ship at the end of Q1 (2 months later). It's possible that the quote is completely wrong, but given what we've seen from ATI in 2004 and 2005, why would 2006 be any different? Either way, I'll still be interested to see what ATI has up it's sleeve.

Some mote news from vr-zone:

NVIDIA CFO Marv Burkett and VP Michael Hara at CSFB Annual Technology Conference 2005 revealed more about the GeForce 7 series where the 90nm G72 (GeForce 7200) and G73 (GeForce 7600) will be announced in Q1 next year. G72 will be 64-bit and support TurboCache technology. Marv Burkett revealed that GeForce 7200 and 7600 series will last between one to one and half year. G71 will be 90nm and is expected to be much higher clocked at 750MHz. As for G80, the development process has been smooth and is slated for mid 2006 release which i suppose during Computex 2006. Also G80 will support Shader Model 4.0.

So, the 7200s will be 64bit plus turbo cache tech.

G71 is probably the refresh of the current G70 porducts i.e 7800GTX/GT.

Things are heating up again!!

edit- the X1800XT CF boards are coming at dec 8th!!! according to hkepc.
