The heart of a 900-year-old saint has vanished from Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland, police and the Cathedral said.

St. Laurence O'Toole's heart was kept in a heart-shaped wooden box in a cage bolted to a wall in Saint Lauds Chapel, Irish police said.

It disappeared between Friday evening and Saturday noon, police said.

Adding to the mystery, there was no sign of a break-in or of damage, police told CNN.

Nothing was taken from the chapel other than the heart,
although Irish media said there were gold candesticks and other valuables there.

Cathedral staff called the disappearance of the relic "truly awful and strange" and said they were "shocked and saddened."

Mystery? Looks like an inside job to me. No signs of forced entry and nothing taken but the heart, someone with a key and access to the cage did this. Investigate people who had access to the key, the cage, and that area of the cathedral. Shouldn't be too hard to narrow it down from there.

Second, I realize its a valuable relic, but seriously? Its not like you can take it to the corner pawn store and fence it.

I wouldn't take it because I respect museum-like settings and would want them to keep the object, but I can definitely see the appeal to having the heart and box as a decorative piece. I'd love it.

Nirvana fan?

What I actually find disturbing is the idea of cutting a heart out of a body and storing it in a wooden box in a church for 900 years.

why would someone steal it? there cant be a large market for 900 year old hearts

Its from a Saint, a religious relic. Catholics have a lot of relics from Saints that are displayed and venerated. So there's definitely value. But, like I said, its not something you're going to be able to sell for money.

Perhaps you could attempt to ransom it back to the church?

This sounds like an opening for a decent action film starring a washed up local cop who stumbles upon a secret society of pagans.

Unchain my heart,
Baby let me be.
Unchain my heart
'Cause you don't care about me.
Why lead me through a life of misery
When you don't care a bag of beans for me.
Unchain my heart and let me be.
