Problem being that this is a genie that won't go back in it's bottle. We could legalize every drug but these cartels aren't going to disappear peacefully. It's always been about power and one can wonder what violence we'd expect if they saw their income threatened.

this is probably true, if drugs became legal and drug profits evaporated, i would be concerned about cartels getting into other businesses, ranging from run of the mill 'protection' to kidnapping and extortion, etc. I suppose that they are already involved in these enterprises though.

Well, what happened to the moonshiners and Al Capone types after the repeal of prohibition? Honestly, I don't really know, but I assume that they transferred their efforts to, well, the drug trade, and probably running casinos in Las Vegas.

Probably not mexico. I'd say a fair bit of the illegal guns in Canada are of US origin though. Huge border, difference in laws, lots of transnational shipping and business... bound to happen.

People dont die unless criminals use guns illegaly. You know a machete works just as well and kills people just as dead. So why cant criminals be done away with just declare martial law and wipe them out with the military. This is a problem because Mexican police work on a system of bribery, and the drug gangs have all the money. Mexico has no ligitimate government. The government is not in control of the situation and the people are just plain scared.
