With the transition to DDR5. It seems there is an excess inventory of DDR4 memory. We are not yet at fire sale pricing. Crucial.com had the 32GB kits for $90 briefly over the weekend. Those sold out pretty fast.

I had a tough time getting 4x16GB sticks of PC3200 to work on a B550 and a B450 (with a 5900X), wound up setting the multiplier by hand and using auto settings for the rest. So I did get 3200MHz, but at CAS 22 or so, ugly (I think the sticks are advertised as 16 or 18). Any 2 sticks work fine as advertised, but there are issues with 4, not sure if X570 resolves this, as B550 has plenty of tweaks there, I just did not have enough patience to debug what needed to be done... Maybe voltage tweaks, who knows. I've always had issues with 4 sticks, going back to DDR I think.
Decided to just stay at CAS 22, as I'm likely less than 5% away in terms of optimal performance. I always run memtest at least 2 or 3 passes to make sure the new settings are stable, otherwise you may get weird random reboots or errors.

I have both a Gigabyte x570 and a MSI B550 Tomahawk motherboard and both are running 4 x 8gb for 32 GB of 3200 Cas 16 and they work flawlessly but I wanted to upgrade to a total of 64gb but it seems like Ryzen or the motherboards are having issues with higher amounts of ram at higher speeds.. :(
Edit: Forgot to ask what brand/model of ram did you try running??

I have 2 of the XLR8 PNY 32GB (2x16GB) EPIC-X RGB™ Gaming DDR4 3200MHz Desktop Memory Kit
Not my first choice, but they priced it mistakenly at 50% off, had to get it.
So like I said, running the full 64GB, but at sub-optimal CAS speeds... I benchmarked with Passmark, and got a score of 3356 in Memory Mark, good for 85th percentile, I figured that was acceptable... That's the lowest percentile of all the scores in Passmark, I'm getting 99th percentile overall, so can't complain :D

Hey, get what you can get and what works. No reason to be embarrassed. Name brands are only that... Name brands. Under the hood the IC's are all usually from the same places. Heck when I first got DDR4 it was some crappy Adata 2400 sticks ,but ran at 3200 speeds before that was even a thing. So sometimes the underdog or less known companies may surprise you.. As long as it works and you are happy that is all that matters in the end~~

Makes sense. I try to stay away from anything PNY, as the company has abysmal customer service and warranty policies, and their products have been nothing but suck for me (2 broken video cards, 2 unreadable memory sticks, probably something else I forgot)... Like I said, the only reason I purchased was the price...

I have an x570 and have tried on two different occasions to get two sets of 16GB running and failed both times. Seems like you need to buy a 4x16GB set to have success. I haven’t done that yet however I am considering it since finding ddr4 memory will become increasingly difficult.

I run 2x8+2x16gb crucial on a x1700, but I had to drop it to 2933/16.

I'm planning to up my current 32GB 4x8GB in my main rig to the same config. I'm hoping the x3700 in that will handle it as 3200/16. I'd be shocked if I couldn't run it at all though.

I never tried 4x16 though, since that's dual dual rank it might be a larger ask I guess.

Sorry to revive the old thread - I just had an update for anybody having issues running 4 DDR4 sticks - I just migrated to an MSI MPG X570S Edge MAX mobo, and put the same PNY XLR8 sticks I had in a B550, and also previously B450 motherboards, where they would not work at XMP speeds. So in the X570S, the 4 sticks are rock solid at 3200, CL16, passed 4 passes memtest86. So maybe motherboard quality has something to do with how many sticks you can run... I would not be surprised if the memory itself is a little picky, and does not like the voltages/power in the B550/B450. One thing I noticed the X570S uses definitely more power than the B550...

The x570 chipset is basically the i/o die from a Ryzen CPU stuck on the motherboard upside down, lol. Dbauer (?) did some tests when this chipset came out and it used twice the idle power of x470 IIRC so its quite a hog. Very unfortunate because the i/o die was already a source of highish idle power draw on AMD systems, at least compared to Intel. And by reusing the die they effectively took their weakness and doubled it. It's one of my pet whines, but most people don't seem to care much about this.

Yeah, what sucks is I was running the previous mobos (450/550) on a Platinum Seasonic 660W, with the only large consumers being an RTX 3070 and 64GB RAM (4 sticks) on a 5900X. No stability issues whatsoever... Now that I switched to the X570S, when I run Performance Test, it shuts down every time on one of the CPU tests... So I likely need to upgrade my PS, I got an 850W one, hope this solves the issue... Not a huge deal, but annoying, however it tells me I must have been close to topping out that PS on the previous systems...

Maybe this isn't the best thread for this...but I'd be very surprised if the motherboard chipset's worse power draw is the cause of the stability issue you are seeing. It doesn't use that much more power so you would have really needed to be right on the hairy edge before.

I had Very good luck with this on my 5600X and my Sons 5800X....... Its no Joke on power savings.

D'oh, now that you mention this, I *may* have enabled shutdown as thermal protect. I'm in the middle of swapping the PS right now, will double check if I did this myself after that's done, I figured I would get that big boy in there anyway (cabling in my case sucks, it's an old Antec 900 that had very little support for cabling behind the motherboard, had to run the flat CPU cables between the motherboard and the backplate myself as a DIY kind of thing...). Bad thing is these CPUs get hot *really* fast when being hammered, I've seen temps climb on a 5800X in Linux really fast, so far I have not been able to figure out how to deal with this... My cooler is very decent on the 5900X, and I used a very thin layer of paste, and made sure the HS adheres to the CPU well, I've done enough of these to know it's not the issue...
Will know soon enough if it was the stupid BIOS setting...

So, after checking, I did not enable this BIOS setting.

PerformanceMark now runs all the way through without incident. So I was either very close on maxing the power on previous systems, or the old power supply may not be as efficient as it used to be - either way, looks like I'm good for now :D
