90% CPU Cycles being "stolen"

Is it the system idle process which is stealing cpu cycles up to 90%?

If so you have nothing to worry about. Run SETI or something if you don't like your cpu sleeping on the job.

This , I noticed because I was having some problems in my graphics driver settings. I then ran 3D mark03 And I got 9000 instead of the 13000 I used to get. The first test only gives an average of 50 frames and that is easily the most CPU intensive. Therefore Im assuming something or something ineffiecient is causing problems. Notice the CPU temp. Its very low for 100% usage. When I run some intensive application, 100% of the cycles are used by it. But I figure that it must be slower to assign the cycles to an application from whatever is using it. Currently scanning for virii.

I may format. Can someone please tell me how I can recover a saved Dial up password? I donot remember what it is. Win XP

Rest of the rig

3200+ winchester @ 2.6
2 GB RAM
Epox 9NDA3J
6800GT
120IDE
200IDE

It doesn't look like 86% is being stolen it looks more like its being missreported as ussage. What troubles me is where is the other 10%.

With nothing running, your system idle process would be 99%.

Your screen looks normal. Note the memory being used by system idle process, almost none.

If you go to your task manager, you will see that at the bottom (in the middle), its going to report 0% usage (I.E not counting the idle process)

How else can a sudden drop by 40% in 3D03 marks just happen?

My bad, Hatim. I thought you were complaining about the system idle being high, which a lot of people misinterpret.

I see your CPU usage is 91% which is decidedly out of whack.

Mine is indeed 0% when I am just surfing the net.

You must have some malware or something else going on.

hatim, i would snoop around your startup to see if anything "strange" is in there....like spyw/malware or old programs hijacking your comp.

go to run ---> msconfig ---> startup tab and just use your bset judgement to uncheck anything you don't think looks right....just google the process if you don't recognize it. That'll probably free up a lot of cycles.

Download some anti spyware programs like ad-aware. You have 3 svchost.exe processes. I only have 1 and I block it in my firewall unless I'm running windows update or something.

I ahve nothing in my startup. But Im having more problems. Suddenly out of nowhere, I get the message that symantec AV has been disabled. I did scan the HDisks last reboot, but no virii were found.

Also, I used a password recovery app to get my pass, so now I shall be reformatting soon...

Nono. You see, in the picture it says that he has 84% unused processes. But then his other software says that his processor is using 91% of it's processing power. Get it?

edit: Just out of curiousity, are you experiencing any symptoms that might indicate your processes are being "stolen?"

The running the 3dmark is a piece of it. And it looks like you have a corporate version of Norton? I don't remember seeing that since atleast 2 years ago (didn't know they still continued it). Now I'm just off topic. It must be all that hidden porn you have playlisted in Windows Media Player (which you obviously have hidden from us).

Do a scan using Trend Micro's online scanner.

Norton Corperate sucks, I just fixed a computer that had a bunch of viruses that Norton Corperate didn't detect at all.

this problem is back. Now taking up 40-50% od my CPU cycles. How do I prevent this? And I did a clean format after the last time this happened becuase of some stupid BSODs. How I hate windoze!! 🙁
