It's got 140,000 miles, so I am assuming the guy drove it with the original timing belt until it broke. If this is the case, what are the implications of the belt breaking? bent valves or something like that?

Also, what all would need to be replaced?

I'm thinking of taking it on as a project car - $750

I should know more, but I believe that when the timing belt breaks, a good bit of damage is done.

go to teamintegra.net or it might be team-integra.net and ask them, they'll know more

See if one of the guys on that forum will come out with you and help you decide

I broke a timing belt on a ford, and it destroyed the water pump. I had to replace both.

that is all i know about timing belts.

if the timing belt breaks on a dohc motor... the valves will smash into the pistons - so at the very least it will need a head

the plus side is that you can get a newer integra LS motor for under $800... and for a few hundred more get a vtech head

It isn't DOHC that does it, it's simply the design of the engine, an "intereference" design.

It doesen't always happen. Generally, only if you're pushing the engine hard when it breaks, AFAIK.

But yeah, find out if the belt is actually broken, or if it's just time for it to be replaced.

There's "needing" a timing belt, and then there's "busted the current, and need another" timing belt.

At 140k, it's a possibility that the belt has been replaced twice and is due for a third change, he just didn't want to spend $300-$600 to replace it.

Then there's the possibility that it's never been changed and it's toast. Honda uses interference designed engines. If the timing belt breaks you = screwed.

Get more info.

It should only be on its 2nd, since they're changed at 90k.

Each manf has their own policy. VW and GM suggest every 60k-70k. That's why I said 3rd change assuming original owner(s) was(were) diligent about changes.

if it's just due for the belt to be changed, you're cool (of course it will cost a lot to change it, though). if the belt broke, run away very fast.

Yup and Acura recomends that the timing belt be changed every 90k miles.

Are you sure it's 90K miles?

I have a 90 Civic Si (1.6l) and I change mine every 90K KM?

Cheers,

I think those engines will damage if the belt/chain snaps. So be carefull, could need new heads.
