For the last month or so my 1990 Accord has been making a really odd noise when I'm turning. Almost like a dog whining, and maybe bordering on the noise of tires squealing. I know it's not my tires... and I'm thinking it's a power steering pump or something of the like.

Can any of you diagnose this from just my sound description? And if so how bad is it and should I get it fixed immediately?

A Taurus I used to have had a power steering fluid leak. When it was getting low, it would make a really annoying whining noise. I'd check that.

CV joints usually click.

Sounds like power steering to me. Check your fluid level, and check for leaks. I had a car once with a pinhole leak in the line, small enough that it would only leak when the wheel was at full lock and the pressure in the line was at its highest. So you could drive for quite a while without losing fluid, but if you tried to parallel park a few times...

Power steering.

My friends Gran Am did this -- he had almost no power steering fluid and a small leak.

It might also be your outer tie rod ends. A car that old probably has no grease left in them and they can make a pretty good squeal when turning also.

My 91 Accord needed a new CV joint when I had that symptom. I just replaced the entire axle instead. Obviously check your power steering fluid first, though, since it is super easy to do. Just open the hood and there are a couple of fuild containers with marks on them for "high" and "low." One will say it is for power steering fluid.

Thanks guys. I'll check my fluids and if it's low I'll have to figure out where it's leaking from.

And with the CV joints... where are those located? When I hear this sound it's almost like it's coming from right behind the dashboard. It's pretty audible in the car so I'd assume power steering would be the most probable.

The CV Joints are covered with rubber boots near the wheel on each side of the car. If you look under there and see a massive amount of nasty grease all over everything, as well as torn boots, then it's replacement time. It's REALLY replacement time when you start hearing a *click click click* while turning.
