Doubt it was the same one, since these are custom made. But who knows.
"The "Big Guy" is Canon's largest EOS prime lens, a ridiculously huge 1200mm monstrosity. There are only about ten of these things in existence. Sports Illustrated owns two of them. Generally speaking you have to be a major corporation to even think about buying one, as they're individually hand milled in Japan to the tune of about USD$80,000 each."

Well, it seems like the same lens I tried. It's probably custom made for the order and it's hand polished, but it's not a custom design. It's a Canon EOS lens and it seems they use the same design for each of them. 1200 EF f/5.6 autofocus USM. See here. CAD$120000, but the store wasn't really selling them. They were just demo'ing it. Despite how $$$ this thing was, they let me get my grubby little hands on it for about 5 minutes. Totally awesome. The guys said the keep a bunch at Canon to rent to sports photographers. He also said one rich oil sheik bought one just for the hell of it.

haha, closest thing it can focus on has to be 46 foot away... 🙂

I think this thing weighs something like 40 pounds, just for the lens:Q It's an old design from before Canon started putting IS on all their long glass too. It would be neat to have, but it would be next to useless to me, and the novelty would wear off soon enough🙁

CPS has at least one for rental but certainly not a bunch of them. Here's a shot from an acquaintance of mine using this lens.
Nice pic! How much was it to rent? Or does he work for SI?

He owns his own company and basically freelances, but does a lot of work for SI and MLB, especially the Giants.

My Favorite Comment
Kevin Fogarty of Canon Professional Services reads the lower line of an optometrist's eye chart on an office wall about twenty blocks away

Holy Crap!!

haha i wish. my paper can't even get around to fixing our lone $4000 300mm 2.8, let alone consider buying a $90,000 lens. 🙁

wow...that's so cool...I want a few shots of a 2nd camera, taking a long-distance shot of the 1200mm lens+camera and it's target, to get a real feel for the distance it's covering....that'd be awesome.

I posted a picture of the guy who shot that bonds photo using it from behind the scoreboard. look up a few posts, and then up a few more for the shot he took of barry's 73rd.

Interesting note: One of the other 10 or so lenses is owned by the family who owns Oakley sunglasses. For what purpose, I don't know. Surfing photos, maybe.
