For some odd reason, I thought the OP would list the ingredients.

So, you read that list, read the things that it "may" cause, and completely ignore that natural foods may cause the exact same problems?

The issue isn't whether or not a food is good for you. The author implied you should avoid chemicals that are created by humans because synthetic chemicals are worse than natural chemicals.

I heard some crackhead nutjob make the same argument about vitamin C. In his mind, vitamin C from an orange contains the "essence of life" while ascorbic acid is just chemicals. This goes in the same category of stupid as people who can't spell their own name.

Gutamate is an amino acid. it tends to stick to sodium, that's MSG. Take most any protein, cook it a little and you'll likely get some glutamate. Add a bit of salt and you'll have MSG.

Ok. I eat raw tomatoes more than cooked, but is me adding salt to pasta sauce made with fresh tomatoes considered the same as MSG in a bowl of processed ramen I buy from the store? :hmm:

I suppose you are correct to laugh at the term "chemical-free" food. I tend to personally define chemicals in food as those which may potentially cause harm.
100% of the food you eat contains dihydrogen monoxide (DHM). Do you have any idea how many people that chemical kills every year?

clearly you need to test this by eating a spoonful of MSG straight out of the jar.

Yes, that is MSG. No cooking required because tomatoes already contain loads of glutamate.

OK OK, then I guess it was something else giving me headaches. It was most assuredly not psychosomatic as I did not know they had MSG prior to eating them. :hmm:

Could be, but I'm all about the sausage, so I would think that would have an adverse impact.

Yes. The headache noodles might just contain something you are allergic to. I have no idea what, but it's always a possibility.

The MSG thing is always interesting because a lot of people don't understand that things like sodium and potassium often don't do anything. What's the difference between sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide? Basically nothing. Organics are a little bit different because sodium takes the place of a hydrogen on the end of the molecule and this can affect the properties (cocaine as a base evaporates, cocaine as a salt does not). Your stomach is filled with acid, so that sodium is probably replaced with hydrogen as soon as you swallow it. The sodium shouldn't make a difference, but I'm not a doctor so I don't know.

it could be that your body reacts to a certain threshold of msg. but MSG occurs naturally in a lot of delicious foods. I believe its standard knowledge now that apart from the 5 tastes you have, there is the 6th, which is called 'umai', also known as the ability to taste msg.

I don't know about that. To keep the story short, I was eating various types of ramen noodles from the local Asian grocery store a while back and I kept getting headaches when I ate 2 specific brands and it turned out those were the two I was purchasing that contained MSG, with all else being close to equal. After that I stopped eating MSG and now I only get headaches from food when there is something more nefarious at work and that is, thankfully, relatively infrequent.

KT

Do you get the same headaches when you eat fried chicken from fastfood places? Most places that serve fried chicken use msg in when they "marinate" their chicken to allow for the chicken to sit under heat lamps for up to 4 hours.

You're an idiot. Most people don't drown in their food, let alone go swimming in it. Yeah, water can kill you if you drink too much of it too, but that's a lot more rare than drowning in it.

Hint: if you see a post about DHM, it's almost certainly a joke.

The 20 shots of vodka you drank for that drinking game you played afterwards?
