Yeah, you heard right. Walmart's now offering Dial-up Service. :D (Are we doomed?)

There's a 700 hour free trial if you don't like it, but I think $10/month isn't a bad deal. I kinda miss all the Dial-up ISP's that were free a few years ago. :(

Woops, forgot to add a link. Walmart ISP

I think its another version of Compuserve /AOL . I presume you have to use their bloated buggy spyware interface and can't use a simple dial-up networking and broswer . Anyway on the plus side, they do have lots of Dial-up POPS and are unlikey to go under as some of the budget ISPs have. Also if your in the cheap dialup ISP market , it is worth taking a look at www.freedomlist.com and ther discussion section.

This was posted several months back, its not a bad deal, unlimited dial-up for $10....

But it is a part of AOL/Compuserve so you won't be able to post here. But that does mean there are a lot of access numbers nationwide.

I think that only applies to the 800 number.

<< You can access the Service Connect anywhere in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands (up to 14.4 Kbps for VFC modems) using CSNet and the number 1-800-716-0023 (up to 28.8 Kbps). Members will be surcharged 10 cents per minute, or $6.00 per hour, for the entire time they are connected using this number (even during your free trial period). >>

However, up to 28.8 Kbps also in Dallas!?! (Area code 972.)

<< Sure, $9.95 plus $.10 per minute for a local access number. Some deal. >>

I've been using Express56.com for a month now. Only $7.95 monthly, unlimited access, with pop3 email. So far only had problems on one weekend, but time will tell how reliable the service is. Anyway, a good url to use to search for ISP's in your area is http://www.findanisp.com/.

It's not available in my area; I guess I'll continue to use my 15.95 unlimited account from my local ISP.

I got one of these for my mom a few months ago. I was going to her house to finish setting up a machine I built for her, so I stopped by Wal-Mart thinking I just get one of those "free xx hours" at AOL disks just to get her on the Internet that day.

Turns out this connects to "wmconnect" and, while affiliated with AOL, is a different service, at least by the mail box addressing, as well as the cost.

She's paid less than $10 a month for 4 or 5 months now, whereas people I know who have the "regular" AOL pay over $21.

So, yes, AOL sucks, but this is actually a good deal for someone who just wants on the Internet via dialup.

I'm planning to get access4less too.
you can check ppl's comments here
With no setup fee and DUN, I think this is a good deal. The only limit is you have to reconnect every 4 hour.

I have Cable but I downloaded the Walmart program to use when traveling ( it is another version of AOL). Also, my dialup family members could use it too although most local access areas are 28.8K even where AOL is 56K. Looked good for $10/month until I see these comments.

bambam---What do you mean about having to use "bloated buggy spyware interface"? Their 800 support person said that their software installed independent of the operating system just like AOL and you could use IE or Netscape instead if you preferred. Am I missing something?

abfpat---What do you mean by "Sure, $9.95 plus $.10 per minute for a local access number. Some deal."? Their support said the only $.10 for the 800 number, but the local access coverage was identical to AOL and free. Am I missing something here again too?

wjsulliv---What do you mean "But it is a part of AOL/Compuserve so you won't be able to post here"? The only thing AOL does differently is their proprietary news and mail servers. Am I missing something here again too?

Are you folks posting bad info, or are the Walmart 800 support folks giving me the bad info? Does anybody here have actual experience with this service and details on the reliability of the local access numbers? Do you get connections or "busy signals"?

Thanks. John

What's up with the discount retailers offering their own ISP's? First Kmart BlueLight, and now this. It looks like a good deal though. Hopefully its reliable. For reviews on "value" ISP's check Freedom ISP Listings. They have a list as well as user feedback for many ISP's

At the rate these companies are going, they will probably start offering DSL service at some point.

Thanks folks for the links to the freedomlist website etc.! I guess did not do my homework!
The Access4Less looks very good but does not have the access number for the area that I need.
The reviews of the Walmart service were mostly favorable, so I will try it!
Thanks again, John

Picked this up as a backup to my cable service. Has some parental controls (since it's an AOL clone) and many dialups in my area. I get 53K type connections almost all the time.

Juno Online dialup isp is only 9.95 a month and has been for a few years... I use them as backup for my cable for when I have to travel.

I got the wal-mart ISP for my wife to use. It is correct that you cant post on the forums through it. But once you connect through their browser window, you can open explorer or netscape. My wife likes explorer and that si what she uses to browse the net in.

She generally connects at between 45k to 49k, once in awhile she gets 52k. Only once that I remember has she gotten below 40k in a connection. Not at all bad for the money. Its a local call for us, so there is no other fee than the 9.95 a month. I still have my dial-up through MSN only because of posting here on the boards.
