So there seems to be outrage brewing over the fact that working class persons (firefighters, police, etc...) are being omitted from the list of invitees to tomorrow's 9/11 memorial service. A cookie's in it for whoever can provide a link to the list of invitees. Thanks...

It's a memorial, for those who passed away. No one is saying firefighters and police can't go, they're just not the focus of that event. Those guys have their own services I believe

this. the dedication is open only to the families of those who lost their lives on 9/11. It will be open to the public thereafter.

they weren't 'invited' to the location the first time either. but they showed up and did their job. this memorial is a sham, a glorified stage for publicity and picture-taking for the rich politicians who don't really give a shit.

I hate to be blunt, but after just a cursory thought...
Ummm, none of the policemen and firefighters who are butt hurt over this actually sacrificed their lives fighting the fires. Their coworkers did. The memorial is for families of people who died, which I assumes includes families of fallen firemen and policemen. The memorial service isn't for coworkers of victims; there's not enough room.

I was watching TV with my 8 year old Niece this afternoon, and they were showing footage of the towers collapsing. There was a particular scene where the second building had just collapsed, and it got real quiet and dark. Afterwards, there were people wandering about the streets like ghosts, and there was a shot of these 3 firefighters walking down the street, AWAY from the carnage. My 8 Year old Niece looks puzzled at what she is seeing and says to me "Uncle, why are the Fireman walking away from the fallen building like that? Shouldn't they be going in the other direction so they can help rescue injured people?". She actually made a very interesting observation. There were lots of fireman who, after the buildings collapsed, were walking away from the destruction, slowly, almost as if they mentally shut down.

Firefighters and police were 10% of the fatalities, not to mention their incredible work for months (years?) after the event.

I have yet to read past the fifth or sixth post where I found this saying they weren't a big part of the ceremony, so I will try and leave it at that until I read more. I sure hope I read differently though...

EDIT: lol, this is a very short thread so far. For some reason I thought it was several pages already.

I agree. The people that endured the biggest loss are the families that have an empty spot in their home. If there is any question about having enough space they should get priority over the coworkers.

Oh wait, so the firefighters and police that were involved have been invited? Then I don't really see the big deal. The article makes it sound like they are the ones that were not invited.

No, the first responders are NOT invited. They're going to stage a second event at some other time and location according to Snopes.
