I wonder why the artist decided to do a sculpture of that nature. I would not look at it to pay tribute or respects for those who parished that day.

the artist did it to get a rise out of people. Getting a rise out of them means he/she gets publicity. Look, the picture is on cnn, the artist has gotten some publicity for free.

Agreed. What bothers me is why the people in charge of "OKing" these things at Rockerfeller Center let this monstrousity be displayed in the first place! It is in very bad taste. Obviously, the artist didn't know anybody that died.

What dysfunctional bureaucracy decided it would be a good idea to display that on the streets of Manhattan!?

If the artist wants to create the art, that's fine by me. But giving the arist such a public forum for a piece of art that is so obviously in questionable (if not outright poor) taste, especially in the context of the location of the exhibit, is idiotic.

A violently disturbing sculpture popped up last week in the middle of Rock Center's busy underground concourse - right in front of the ice-skating rink. It depicts a naked woman, limbs flailing, face contorted, at the exact moment her head smacks pavement following her leap from the flaming World Trade Center

tasteless

that is just wrong :disgust:

Maybe the artist can do a statue of a plane crashing into the Pentagon. That would be nice. Or why not a statue of a some of the dismembered passengers of the flight that went down in Pennsylvania.

Yeah it's art all right; the kind that makes you feel as if you've been sucker-punched.
I don't think this statue is offensive any more than a statue of a plane or a picture of a field would be as memorials to the Pentagon or Pennsylvania crashes. The raising of the flag by the three firefighters is now famous (and should be), despite the ragged flag and the destroyed buildings in the background. Should we hide this image as well?
The raising of the flag shows a triumph of the spirit, this shows quite simply a depiction of a persons death during a tragic event. Most people seem to feel that it is tasteless. Fine, not all art is in good taste and I can accept that fact. But simply because it is called art does not mean that we should feel obligated to appreciate it or even look at it. I think it is a POS that was done just for the reactions it would stir and not as an artistic expression.

I don't recall ever seeing a nude woman jumping from the building.

And I'm pretty sure I would have remembered THAT!

To me, the statue appears to be the way the artist expressed his emotions about what happened on 9/11. Should it be on public display? I don't think so. Should the artist be castigated for expressing in a language he knows best? I don't think so! Putting it on public display was in poor taste. But as art form, I think the sculptor appears to be very good with his work. Very imaginative and very evocative. This sculpture would be a lot more meaningful to future generations that will be disconnected from the horrible events of 9/11. It has the potential to become one of the finest renderings of the pain and unimaginable anguish caused by 9/11. If people falling from the WTC Towers should not be rendered in art, shouldn't we first burn all the video and photo documentation of the attack? If this artist cannot "speak" about what he recollects of that event, then nobody should be allowed to discuss it. Nobody should be able to mourn over the people that fell to their deaths from the towers. But again, I reiterate - putting this on public display, especially so soon after the events was a poor decision - people aren't disconnected enough from the event to have to be reminded in a manner so stark and unforgiving :(

When I look at the statue, I really don't see someone jumping out of a building. I have seen more graphic art than this statue. Others may say it brings back too many memories or something. Hey, you are open to your own interpretation. If you think the statue is done in poor taste, you have to realize that everyone is entitled to their opinion on a piece of art.

There are people that need to get over it and move on. There are entirely too many people obsessing over what happened over a year ago. It is reasons like this the terrorists are winning.

This? Disturding? I don't think so. Disturbing was when the week after 9/11/01 happened, Newsweek (main Long Island newspaper) put a 12x14 picutrure of a man falling to his death on the front page.

I think the art is a great emotional depiction of that day. People will look at photos and video to recollect what happened that day but a simple sculpture of a nameless/expressionless face in a tumbling position is too much?? Get real, do you cover your eyes when you see the video?

Its a very simple but very moving portrayal.

A bronze statue of an upside-down woman? Who cares? I've seen steel rods put in the ground, someone calling it art, and people "oohing and ahhing" over it.

I think you guys who are dissing the statue are really upset over what it represents, not the statue itself. Remember, a 16 page scratch-n-sniff pic of a vagina is considered art, also.

There's no blood, no dismemberment, no disconfiguration, just a woman in a tumbling position. Just the fact that people are struck by it so strongly shows how affective the artist was in capturing the depth of the emotions and pain that day.

The nakedness is more about innocence or vulnerability and is affective.

If you want to take a plight against PC art, go after the government funding of some of the crap that comes out of the National Endowment for the Arts, not this.

How you react to the statue tells you (and here, of course, others) something about who you are.

lol I was wondering the same thing :) I think it's better if the bear's holding it.

I heard that the artist is continuing in the series... his next work will be of a nameless Jewish man taking his last breath of air before being gassed in a Nazi concentration camp.
