8yr old DS gamer needs a challenge

So, when he turned 8 I bought him Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow thinking that it was time for him to have a real game. Previously he was playing disney movie games and beating them overnight. When I asked my sister-in-law what he thought of Castlevania: DoS his response was "it was awesome and easy as pie". So now I need some suggestions. I'm 1/2 tempted to get him Contra 4 and make him cry on christmas as he repeatedly dies and starts the game over.

What do you guys think? That, or another castlevania game? or some other challenging game? I'm trying to debate getting him an RPG since he's getting old enough to read through the dialogue. Esp since Chrono Trigger just came out. I just think he is used to side scrollers....

Any advice is appreciated.

I believe the latest Castlevania DS (Order of Ecclesia) is supposed to be harder than the previous two. Sounds like Contra 4 might not be a bad idea, either. I finally completed it on Easy last night.

+1, if he liked the other Castlevainia I've also heard OOE is much more difficult. Have also heard that Contra 4 is punishingly difficult.

Just Beat Castlevania OoE. It is much harder than the previous DS entries. I also own Contra 4 and that game is without a doubt one of the hardest games I have ever played. So if you were looking to give him a challenge either game would work.

thanks for the advice. I might just get him OoE so he has a shot at beating it since he never played the original contras. I heard this is more of a homage to how hard the old school ones were.

I've played all the Castlevanias for the DS plus Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow (Gameboy doublepack), and SoTN on my 360. OoE is significantly harder than all of these (and I haven't finished yet). Pick it up for the little one and tell us how he does. BTW, Chrono Trigger is a great new release too (well, a great new release of an old game).....long playtime but maybe a bit too easy. Good story.

well, his older brother who is 11, i think, might appreciate chrono trigger. So, OoE for the 8yr old and chrono trigger for the older brother.

Once again - thanks AT!

An RPG for the reading might be great not only for fun and challenge but for his brain growth.

Order of Ecclesia is much harder but not nearly as good as Dawn of Sorrow, it's an awesome game nevertheless.

Get him N+, that's another great, challenging platformer with very fluid controls.

Does it have to be a platformer/action game? Because I might recommend Trauma Center: Under The Knife if he's looking for something hard. Believe me, that game gets very, VERY difficult later on. However, it is rated T, probably because it involves cutting people open and messing around with their insides. Judgment call on you. There aren't massive quantities of blood or anything.
