Just saw this on their latest in-store offers. Officemax will have an 8X DVD burner for $199.99 - $70 Instant Rebate and $50 MIR. In-store only possibly the I/O Magic rebadged Optorite. Your guess is as good as mine. Hard to believe 8X burners already this cheap. Starts Sunday.

"Source of this info?"

It's in their latest in-store offers that you can preview by signing up to receive e-mail offers weekly from OfficeMax. Try this link, just click on your state and town, the same ad should come up. It's on the first page of the ads. You can click to enlarge. As to whether or not it's the I/O Magic, that's the drive they have been having on sale recently, you'll have to go to a store to find out.

OfficeMax Specials

It's a KHypermedia 8X Internal DVD+RW Drive. I could not find any info on this drive, no info on the KHypermedia.com site, no info on who's rebadged drive is in the KHypermedia box. I would guess it's a rebadged BTC MFG drive, that's who makes the KHypermedia CDRW drives.

According to the rebate slip for it, it's a Khypermedia DVD+RW burner. Relabeled BenQ, perhaps?

The $50 rebate is good from 12/28-1/3, and again from 1/18-1/24.

Oops, too slow 🙂

Any speculation as to the quality of this drive?

Just noticed that it shows it to be just a +RW writer and not dual format. If is just a +RW it may be a Benq. I think they make an 8X burner that's not dual format. Got a pretty good review at cdrinfo.com. Don't understand why anyone would still make a single format drive now.

Lately OfficeMax has put DVD+RW Drive in their ad , but the drives they were selling were dual DVD+/-RW Drives.
Someone call a store and ask if it a single or dual format drive.

Tried callin, but the moron who answered had no idea which drive I was talking about...Anything I can tell him to make is simpler for a OM guy to figure out which one I'm talking about?

Actually with the feature of being able to change the Book Type of a disc with the Benq you would be able to burn +R discs at 8X and change the Book Type to DVD ROM and the discs should play in just about anything, including standalones that would ordinarily only play -R discs. And since you can't burn -R discs at 8X yet, this might not be so bad if it is a Benq.

Benq 8X +RW Review

If this is a Benq, I will get one for sure. Excellent reviews.

It may indeed be a BenQ. I had an OM employee read the speeds off the box and they matched those of the BenQ:

DVD+R: 8X CD-R: 24X DVD+RW: 4X CD-RW: 10x

It is a + drive, not dual format. A message and email sent to Khypermedia asking for more specs or the name of the manufacturer went unanswered. The single format and slower-than-some CD-R speed leave me uninterested.

Who cares what speed a DVD burner had for CD's. You can buy a Lite-On 52X CD-RW for as little as $10 after rebates on sale. Unless of course you are trying to choose one burner for everything. And in regard to lacking -R burning capability, being able to change the Book Type to DVD ROM makes whatever discs you burn compatible with practically everything.

Im interested in this drive. Where can I learn more about "changing the Book Type to DVD ROM"?

KHpermedia 52xCDRW I got BF is an Optorite. 🙂

It looks like the I/O Magic 8XDVDRW along with the Kypermedia 8X drive will be onsale 1/11/04 to 1/17/04 as well as 1/18/04 to 1/24/04 with $50 rebates. (Maybe wait and see how others like it? You will have 2 more chances for the Khypermedia.)

I have the I/O magicspin. (Got it for $19AR on Tues) I have burned about 15 good ones on Memorex 4XRW media and they have burned at 4X. The reason I love this drive (for $19) is that it burns CDR (of which I have over 300 FAR) with a technology called HDburn. This doubles the amount of storage from 700MB to 1.4GB. This is significant because I have been able to burn 2 Seasons of ALias, 2 seasons of 24, and 1 season of CSI for free using cheap CDR's. One episode fits at great quality (Above VHS) on the CDR using DVD X-Plat.

Anyone aware of other 8X DVDRW units that have something like this?

So whos going to get this? For the people who do get this drive please give a personal review of the drive.

I read throught eh full review, but Im wondering how this compares to the other DVD 8X burners that are on sale now too in this Hot Deals Forum.

Like I thinke TDK, Sony, LiteOn were the 3 main ones that are on sale now. but none as low priced as this drive. But those are dual format though.

Only reason I see not to get this drive is that its not dual format. I know about the DVD book thing to change it, but sometimes DVD-R or DVD-RW is cheaper than the +R or +RW stuff. For example microcenter just had the deal with -R for .25 cents each for the 4X But nothing for the +R's
