After reading the BenQ drive review i think that would be the best deal right if we got that drive.

I hated my Magic Spin CD burner made tons of coasters using that brand of drive.

Im going to check my Officemax tomarrow, how can I tell immediatly if i have a BenQ or Optiwrite or some other rebadged drive?

Also, is there any way i could verify this is the optorite drive. The drive itself is labeled: manufactured by Top-G, and the front panel looks nothing like the optorite.

How'd you get it for$28.99? Did you get a manager's discount?

any helpful sites that will help me

According to the substitution list we received from corporate, the drives are supposed to be sold $79.99 out the door. Often times the substitution list specifies that a particular rebate will be honored for particular alternate SKus or manufacturers so I doubt that they were supposed to do it that way. At this point though I'd make backup copies of your submission and/or have them sign off in writing that it will be honored so that you can be promptly refunded when they refuse your rebate. 8X Dual Format though for $80 no rebates was sweet enough for employees to buy all but one of the drives we received :) Good luck all.
Cheers

If the substitution was truly meant to be 79.99 out the door then I feel I slighted. I don't trust the instruction to send in the rebate as if a Khypermedia drive using the MagicSpin UPC code. I plan to return to the store where I made my purchase in an attempt to get my purchase price updated to 79.99, if they do not want to honor it they can have the drive back for their stock by cheerfully refunding my purchase price of 129.99 plus tax [I have not installed the drive].

Chris, I did a Google search for Top-G and best I can tell is Top-G [Top Glory] are BTC drives marketed as HiVal, MagicSpin, Mad Dog, etc. Perhaps some of the other thread posters can confirm or correct us on the answer.

Top-G is indeed BTC. Mine works as advertised and is remarkably quiet even burning cd's at 40x

The cheapest I could find the Benq retail drive is $132 shipped at this random pricewatch store. That book type editing seems really sweet and it has an 8 meg buffer. $52 extra seems pretty reasonable... must resist buying...

I also got the Magic Spin. It is a rebadged of the BTC 1008IM. At least mine is. I upgraded to firmware version 054.

Ok, does anyone know a way to tell the actual drive from the Magicspin box *withOUT* opening it?

I've got:

BDVDRW8D
UPC: 78806900898

If it's the optorite, I'm returning it...I'd rather have the BenQ drive...

The store would not give me an instant rebate on the 50 bucks so I told them I wanted a refund. I paid with a personal check yesterday so they told me my refund would be a have to be in the form of a gift card [I was cool with that option]. Just as they were issuing the gift card another employee mentioned the Khypermedia's were in stock. Sure enough, they were several on a table near the registers so I grabbed one and used the newly issued gift card to make the purchase. Now I am confident I will receive the $50 rebate since I now have a Khypermedia UPC code to send in with the new receipt. I haven't opened the box yet so I do not know what drive is inside, I will post my finding soon.

Even if this turns out to be a less desirable drive than the Optorite I returned I can sell the drive cheap and still wait for the rebate. This is my first entry into DVD writers, price was definitely important to me at this time [since we all know the deals will be getting better and better].

"The BTC drive does not support 8x burning on -r media, just on +r media"

Wasn't trying to confuse the issue, but based on the way the page I had linked read it was for both formats. Apparently BTC needs to work on their presentation skills.

curious. i have the plextor 8x, it burns 8x on all the 4x media i've boughten from officemax. Do these drives function the same? I dont think i'll ever really need to buy 8x media, as its a ripoff price wise.

Just curious if i wanted another (But cheaper) drive, do they function the same, 11080kb/s on 4x +r media?

I got the Cyberdrive too. Looks like a pretty decent drive for what I paid. This is a YMMV, but try a $20 off $100 Staples card. I went there when it was pretty crowded and handed the card over. I had asked a manager beforehand and he said it was OK.

Burn it up!!!! I was able to get the magicspin 79.99 out the door. I am still testing the drive. So far, 5 burns and all were playable on dvd-players. I took a couple "backups" to wallmart to try them out! I picked up a 5pack of +rw fuji's at bestbuy today and they burn great at 4x. The media that came in the box only burned at 2.4. I am using nero and was wondering If there was a way to force the drive to burn at faster speeds???

The best thing about this thing is the ability to get rid of all the F*&KING trailers. Now I can put a movie in and it plays!!!! Totally satisfied so far.

All the sku's are the same. They don't tell what is inside the box.
