I have Pinnacle 9, but when I try to render, it needs to download the mpeg2 (something) put the Pinnacle site has changed and it doesn't work. 10 year old software...crap

Sooo.. what is good fairly cheap software to create dvd's with menus' etc, just like Pinnacle Studio 9, but works on XP ? Pinnacle 16 requires Win Vista or better.

I use ConvertXtoDVD. It does a really good job at converting most formats to VOB for playing on a dvd player. It also still supports XP.
Has a nice built in menu support to like you are wanting.

The bad part is it costs right around $50. Kinda steep and I usually don't like or recommend payware, but ConvertX is a really nice easy to use piece of software.

And it has menu's, and can capture to disk from the camcorder, make scenes like Pinnacle ? I saw Sony Movie Studio 11, but only 2 reviews on the egg, and the description is very limited, $40

I'm not sure you you already have the video footage captured (such as into an avi file). I haven't used Pinnacle, but if you do have the capture file already, it's likely that it nearly needs to be converted in DVD compliant MPEG2 video. Then you can load the converted file into Pinnacle and do menus as before. If this is the case, you can use free conversion software listed here (this site is a goldmine BTW):
http://www.videohelp.com/tools
These results looked promising to me:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/D2MP
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD-Flick

Additionally, those softwares also seem to have built-in DVD author functions so you may not even need to then use Pinnacle

For other options, see these 2 catagories:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/video-encoders-mpg-dvd
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/authoring-dvd

In case you need to do the capturing, have a look here:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/dv
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/capture

Usually around Thanksgiving and or Christmas time, Fry's offers free after rebate deals on some of the consumer level all-in-one Video capture & editing programs such as Corel or Sony Vegas

Wow, thats a great list !

No, nothing in avi or otherwise. In Pinnacle, you capture from their hardware (composite port) and use line in for the audio. Then select the clips and put them in a timeline, add photos, other sound, menus, titles, etc.. And last you render to a DVD ISO file. Worked great 10 years ago, but now (new install) when I click the required thing to download some kind of mpeg converter, the web site at Pinnacle has a 505 error. I am sure they stopped supporting Pinnacle 9 long ago.

No, I don't think it can. After googling Pinnacle 16 I think you're after a different type of software than I originally thought. Sorry about that....:|

OK if you need to do capturing as well as editing and DVD export this one looks very promising - for this company's software, I believe the standard practice is the free download is fully featured for 30 day trial and then goes into reduced functionality mode (but still useable) afterwards if you don't pay:
http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/index.html

I would guess that after the 30 days you might not be able to export to DVD (commercial MPEG2 converters typically require a license, which may be the issue you're having with your old Pinnacle needing to verify your installation and then downloading a no longer existing MPEG2 encoder file from their site). But you could give it a shot

OK, I can't even create a DVD using SONY Movie Studio 11. I got pissed off and ordered Pinnacle 16. Will have to do all the movie making for my friend, since they only have Windows XP.

You should be able to create a DVD with it. I have an older version 9 and could export DVD MPEG2 file and the same install disc included Sony DVD Architect which is used for DVD Authoring (the menus and stuff). I installed that separately but the serial key was listed on the same card as Movie Studio's serial key. There was a hard copy of the DVD Architect manual included in the box which made it hard to miss, dunno about v.11
