8k7a IDE problems

I just got back from my friends house trying to help him set up his new system with an 8k7a. The system posted everything works, but it will only recognize the HD or DVD when they are in the primary IDE. If i go into the bios i can get it to recognize the secondary one, but when i save and exit, they dont get recognized anyway. As for the A: drive, it just fails to boot everytime and i dont know whats happening with it, but all the drives work. Anyone know whats wrong?
