8GB
Horizon Forbidden West 3060 is faster than the 2080 Super despite the former usually competing with the 2070. Also 3060 has a better 1% low than 4060 and 4060Ti 8GB.

Resident Evil Village 3060TI/3070 tanks at 4K and is slower than the 3060/6700XT when ray tracing:

Company Of Heroes 3060 has a higher minimum than the 3070TI:

10GB / 12GB

Reasons why still shipping 8GB since 2014 isn't NV's fault.
  1. It's the player's fault.
  2. It's the reviewer's fault.
  3. It's the developer's fault.
  4. It's AMD's fault.
  5. It's the game's fault.
  6. It's the driver's fault.
  7. It's a system configuration issue.
  8. Wrong settings were tested.
  9. Wrong area was tested.
  10. Wrong games were tested.
  11. 4K is irrelevant.
  12. Texture quality is irrelevant as long as it matches a console's.
  13. Detail levels are irrelevant as long as they match a console's.
  14. There's no reason a game should use more than 8GB, because a random forum user said so.
  15. It's completely acceptable for the more expensive 3070/3070TI/3080 to turn down settings while the cheaper 3060/6700XT has no issue.
  16. It's an anomaly.
  17. It's a console port.
  18. It's a conspiracy against NV.
  19. 8GB cards aren't meant for 4K / 1440p / 1080p / 720p gaming.
  20. It's completely acceptable to disable ray tracing on NV while AMD has no issue.
  21. Polls, hardware market share, and game title count are evidence 8GB is enough, but are totally ignored when they don't suit the ray tracing agenda.
According to some people here, 8GB is neeeevaaaaah NV's fault and objective evidence "doesn't count" because of reasons(tm). If you have others please let me know and I'll add them to the list. Cheers!

^I'd buy a 4080 for a dollar! xD

Btw Robocop is playable even on a GTX 1070....*ahem*...with correct settings. This is a run I did, on the first part of the game. (non monetized vid, but it has a copyright claim due to the soundtrack). I used EPIC textures, since y'all like your textures so much. VRAM usage is at around 5.5GBs, so 8GBs are enough! xD

And to put things at a perspective, here is the same run on the 3060ti, at full EPIC settings. Vram is typically at around 6GB's but it has some spikes. No 8GB problems here either.

Vex comes in with some notes: N/vidia cards use less VRAM than AMD now? /better in-memory texture compression?
Some of it is better driver optimization/compression, but a lot is offloading more to system RAM. I saw many examples across multiple videos where system RAM allocation was higher on NV.

But allocation is academic when we have actual performance metrics showing 8GB tanks. Also Vex's video showed 10GB isn't enough for Plague Tale, so that's a second example of > 8GB not being enough (added to OP with correct timestamp).

It's MindFactory, so there are the usual caveats that apply. I'm also not sure that your conclusion is even correct. If you look at the detailed breakdown, the 4060 has practically the same sales as the 3060.

Really it's just AMD pricing the 7800 XT well and that selling gangbusters. It's almost 40% of AMD's unit sales. Close to double the number sold than any other card, AMD or NV.

I think the real story is that gamers like value for their money.

Everything is playable at correct settings. ;)
The question is If you want to play It at those settings.
In that post, I showed both the 1070 and the 3060ti, both being 8GB cards, with very different capabilities, which was the aim of that post.

The 3060ti has always been twice as fast as the 1070 and this never changed, due to them having the same buffer.

The 1070 is now 7.5 years old. It's essentially a Gen 8 product, that can run Gen 9 games. I only have the utmost respect for it, as a tech product.

Here is a side by side run of these two, with Youtube multiplier

Actually the wrong brightness settings of the 3060ti recording, make it look worse, so the 1070 is doing OK I guess. All that with the help of xess of course, otherwise it would be unplayable on the 1070.

No one ever claimed that 8GB isn't enough for the 1070. It was in fact a great jump at the time, double the vram of the 970/980 and even 33% more than the 980 Ti. It's aged extremely well partly because of that. As you say, you're hardpressed to push it into a VRAM limitation without running out of horsepower well before you do.

The 3060 Ti/3070/4060 Ti are a different story, and the whole basis of this thread which you seem to be willfully missing. There are loads of games where 8GB VRAM becomes an issue at settings where there is more than enough horsepower to run at acceptable framerates but turn into stuttery messes. As you've shown not every game pukes on an 8GB card at settings it would run if it have 16GB, but that's hardly the point either.

As a 3060ti owner, allow me to know better if it has problems. I got it for 1080p and still runs like a champ. I only faced one issue in its three year time so far. Ratchet crashing with version 1.828 with a fat "out of video memory" message. This does not allow any misconceptions. It got fixed with 1.922. I cannot max it out, but this is both a gpu power issue as it is a vram issue. Even with 10-12-16-24GBs it would be unplayable on the 3060ti maxed.

The notorious TLOU had some trouble at first, but it got much better with time. Forspoken did miss some textures, but also got better with time. And I have serious reservations that the storage speed was also at fault there. Will retest.

Now if anyone got these 500-600 cards with higher expectations, they chose wrong in my book. 400 for the 3060ti at launch was not too bad for high caliber 1080p. 500 for the 3070 or 600 for 3070ti was yikes. I didn't buy them, I am not defending them. I am defending what I own. Even so, a 3070ti owner that got it for high framerate at 1080p did not necessarily chose wrong.

The problem I have with this thread, is that it is too generic and it focuses on created problems instead of obvious solutions. Also not all 8GB cards are the same, as not all 12GB and 16GB cards are the same.

What is even worse, is that you are not getting married to the damn thing. Video cards and gaming chips in general, are always getting relegated. Sell the damn thing to a gamer that can make good use of it, according to his needs and get a better card. Users that got 3070s/3070tis are above medium level users anyway and these cards are not going to cut it for UE5, Creation Engine 2, Zouna Engine or anything that pushes graphics tech hard.

The 4070ti itself has problems with these and vram has nothing to do with it. You are making a big fuss for nothing.

You bought a 1440p card to play 1080p, sounds pretty much the same as what 4060Ti owners will get: a 1080p card to play 720p.
Yep, NV themselves advertise 3060TI for 1440p gaming:

Priced at just $399, built on the world’s most powerful PC gaming platform and featuring ray tracing and AI-powered DLSS, the RTX 3060 Ti is faster than the previous generation GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, priced at $699, and delivers blistering 1080p and 1440p gameplay.

So someone's lying here. Is it NV? Or the random anonymous internet person claiming 3060TI @ 1440p is "the wrong setting"? o_O

I see people are skipping the 1080p part of that, including yourself. They advertise it as 1440p & 1080p so moaning about someone using it for 1080p is pretty pointless & petty. As for it's usefulness at 1080p or 1440p, well that (as always) depends on the game, settings etc.

Talk about a broken record. We are just beating a dead horse here.

Looks like Rust (of all games!) will grab well over 8GB, if it's available:

1700776968428.png

I've seen it almost use all 16GB in previous sessions. This is at 1920x1200, very high settings; GPU utilization is ~50%.
