Do you need the features of Ultimate? Home Premium should be more than enough for most home users.

Might want to read the forums over at Cgtalk then.

There are issues with almost every program, Max, Avid, Photoshop and vista.
Some are minor like viewports trailing garbage, others are more serious like plugins crashing.
Myself and most people that do 3d use XP x64 for that reason. It's been tested longer and the programs were designed with it in mind. Otherwise vista is fine. Just make sure what you use isn't going to have problems.

I'd vote XP64..

Though.. I'll admit I'm running Windows 7 on my quad-core laptop at work.

Unless you need RDP (And if you don't know what that is, you probably won't need it), and BitLocker, there isn't really any reason to use Ultimate.

Maybe I don't understand the original question, but... I had an MSDN freebie copy of 32-bit Vista Business and never installed it. I decided I wanted Vista x64, so I tried using a friend's Ultimate x64 DVD with my Business key and it successfully installed the 64-bit version of the Business Edition. As far as I know, that's perfectly legit. You just need to get your hands on a 64-bit installer and use the key provided with the 32-bit disc. Don't know if the keys are different for "upgrade" copies or if this would work for you.

Yes it will work just fine. I did the same with a Dell "Express Upgrade Disk". You just have to use an OEM Disk X64 then enter the legit X32 DVD Key when asked during the installation. OEM X32 keys will work fine for OEM X64 installation.
