The Fry's Electronics in Austin Texas is selling the Maxtor 8mb cache 160GB hard drive for $89.99 after rebate. The instore cost was $119.00 if I remember correctly. decent deal.

its a good drive except that I really avoid maxtors due to the 1yr warranty.

Then you'd best avoid ALL HD manufacturers, because virtually every single one out there has a 1 year warranty on it except for their "Special Edition" or equivalent drives. This Maxtor is the 8MB, part of their Ultra Series, with the 3-year.

It's funny to read a post where there's more factual errors than sentences.

1) Western Digital retail boxed hard drives come with 3 year warranties.
2) Virtually all retail boxed Maxtor drives (DiamondMax 9 or not) come with 1 year warranties.
3) some bare Maxtor drives come with 3 year manufacturer's warranties.
4) This 160GB 8MB cache Maxtor drives comes with a 1 year warranty. I have bought 3 from different stores and all are the same.

Might wanna take a dose of your own medicine about your first point... I saw yesterday at Circuit City that Western Digital is now selling a 8MB buffer IDE drive retail boxed with a ONE YEAR WARRANTY (I think it's a JR model, new to me, as JB are the 8MB buffer/3-year drives). Shocked the crap right outta me. They still have the "Special Edition" drives retail boxed with 3 year warranty, just seems they are selling a lowballed version of that drive with a chimpier warranty.

I should have repeated the "special edition" phrase just for you. I thought it was clear from the section I quoted that I was replying to the WD SE models in point 1) since it's WD that sells a drive labelled "Special Edition". No one else does. I'll know better next time. Thanks!

Good to see that the flaming hasn't stopped on this forum. I was under the impression that most stuff had 1-year and only higher end drives had 3-year drives. Apparently I'm mistaken as the HD companies are messing around with warranties to confuse the crap out of consumers.

A thousand apologies o great brilliant one - Hans007. Thank you for correcting my error which clearly would have had incredible impact on the status of hard drives in the world, not just limited to this forum.

I got a WD SE drive with 3 year warranty...it's so noisy I replaced it with a Maxtor Plus9 like this one. Idle is MUCH quieter thanks to its FDB motor, and if you enable AAM, seeks aren't much louder either. So yeah, 1 year warranty. But at least I don't have to suffer with an annoyingly whiny drive in a system I designed to be quiet. I passed the WD SE drive onto a friend whose system fans drown out the sound of the WD drive anyways.

Yea my WD 120gb SE is louder than these maxtors. I am planning to RMA the WD since it so loud and hope they send me a newer and more quieter drive. Also the acoustic management works with these drives? I thought they only worked only on the older maxtor models?

Yup, Acoustic management is alive and well in the latest Maxtor models. Mutes the seek noise considerably on the Maxtor Plus9 drives.

Here are the noise spec comparisons between WD and Maxtor 7200rpm drives:
WD: 35dB idle / 39dB seek
Maxtor Plus8 (20-40GB): 27dB idle / 29dB seek
Maxtor Plus9 (60GB+): 27dB idle / 35dB seek

dB is exponential, with every ~3dB increase = 2x.

they backordered my order. What a bunch of crap! It was in stock at time of purchase. I was told from the time I clicked purchase and the time my card cleared (isn't that seconds ) it was backordered. Cancelled order and told them to screw someone else...resellerratings got an ear full from me. Any other place I can inform users of this bull?

Fry's in Tempe didn't have a big selection (none with the ATA-133 card, so who knows if the rebate is good). I went to CompUSA in Chandler, AZ to price match with the ad, and they told me they would go to $119 (their list was $179), but not honor the $40 rebate. There's service for you...
