Run it from a command line, not start\run, so you can see what's happening. You must be admin to run it.

Dos prompt gives same result - a very quick seperate DOS box with a blue font pops by, something about file copied but that seems about it. My user ID is an administrator but often I still get prompts asking for administrator permission (but not with mpsrpts)

You're probably running vista then with UAC turned on? Turn if off and try again.

Same result, I verified through control panel that UAC is off...also moved file to a couple of different directories. I've tried to capture the white box with screenshot so I can try to read the whole thing but I'm just not fast enough

I just did a search for all files=todays date and I see the mpsrpts.exe but I don't see any cab files...thinking it was one of those 'copied' files. I did discover that I am generating several of these every day:

22:02:57:085 : DEBUG: _wsetlocale returns: English_United States.1252
22:02:57:253 : DEBUG: Cleaning working path in the calling thread
22:02:57:384 : DEBUG: Failed to remove directory C:\Windows\TEMP\lpksetup with error 3
22:02:57:509 : PERF: RestorePointEnd - ENTER
22:02:57:630 : PERF: RestorePointEnd - LEAVE

filename lpksetup-date-xxxxx-x.log

ALSO I found a file with this in it

Microsoft Platform Support Reporting Tool v5.2.2004.1 - Setup/Perf Speciality

I do hve a directory c:/windows/mpsreports then setup then reports and bin. reports holds above file and an empty cab directory. bin has a bunch of .exe's. I found this readme which is the same I found on google, with this paragraph

When you run this tool you will see a Command Window start up. The tool runs in that Window. You will then see this file open up in a text editor. When the tool is done you will see an Explorer Window open up.

however this behavior is not happening.

2x click on xp.cmd in the bin directory. Say yes to the first prompt. Send me the resulting .cab file.

I got a pile of .txt, .evt, but no cab. The readme indicates that a cab file will be created :frown: going to try running makecab seperately

Done. The finish.cmd was giving error about not finding /Cab so I tried making the /cab subdirectory just about everywhere but it would not run. PC name is Operations (from La Femme Nikita) and the unknown USB device is an X360 controller now charging.

OK, so what happened when you went back to Microsoft WHQL drivers for your video card? :)

While you're at it, run verifier and enable driver checking on all drivers. That's the top option, then the 'all drivers on this PC' option. If you can't boot due to bluescreens, boot into safe mode and run verifier again and turn off all verification. The resulting memory dumpfile(s) should point to the bad driver.

You have a history of so many different BSOD's I'm tempted to say you have hardware issues, but let's look at this for a little while first. (This is totally different from the above error you initially had.)

I did install WHQL certified Nvidia drivers non-beta currently, and they did not affect the SYSTEM EXCEPTION ERRORs, I have not had the PROCESS HAS LOCKED PAGES bsod yet ( remember that was a weekly problem) .but I will tell you this much - the RAM story (4GB) is interesting. I had 4GB, 4 sticks of the same RAM. I sent 2 into OCZ for RMA, they lost it. They returned me two 'higher quality' sticks. I told them they needed to be compatible before they sent them. These are higher speed rated. Anyway, about noon I went in and went back to 4GB but I put the higher speed sticks into my orange slots and my slightly slower ones in my yellow slot on my DFI mobo. So far none of those System Exception Errors, which I was getting so heavily for a few days. I guess the jury is still out since it's been ~3 hours but I have a feeling that's fixed SYSTEM EXCEPTION.

Seperately I found this thread and posted in it. This thread is about those PROCESS_HAS_LOCKED_PAGES weekly errors that I initially entered this thread about.

OK I just got a PROCESS HAS LOCKED PAGES. I use an Xbox 360 wireless microphone as my microphone through my Windows/360 wireless adaptor. I was in Lord of the RIngs online, and I went to my Xbox to get my mic. When I activated it, I heard the USB tone for activating a new USB device. Then LoTRO crashed. Then I got process has locked pages, and it listed the ctoss2k.sys driver and did a minidump. I can send that later but I'm trying to reconnect with my group right now. At least it wasn't SERVICE EXCEPTION, I think I licked that one by swapping the sticks in the slots

I'm not quite sure. I have no indications from the Windows Update center about my audio card. The Driver tab says date 05/10/07, version 6.0.1.1302. the web site says 2.15.0002. Hitting driver details shows 6.00.01.1302-2.15.1030 so mine looks a bit newer (?)

I had a horrid time getting my 5 speakers working with OpenAL (my right speaker producing both center and left and right channels) and so forth, I said to myself I would have to set aside a lot more testing days the next time I touched those babies.

So , it's working, but I'm not sure if these are the 'newest' except for the lack of Microsoft nagging. I could do a system restore then try to install the ones off the creative support site.

The good news is that swapping the sockets on my 4 ram sticks has eliminated SYSTEM EXCEPTION

I think it's intended only for very specific instances - those who have 512MB graphics cards and need to do huge texture copies while also alt-tabbing (certainly there are other ways to run out of the 2G limit).

It strikes me as a pretty infrequent occurrence among people with average hardware. Do we have anyone with definitive examples of what this fixed and before-and-after scenarios?

I've had a really really really BAD week. I went through bouts of bsod's that increasingly got worse yesterday. In the middle of testing RAM, uninstalling drivers, and so forth, I discovered that 2 sticks of RAM won't even boot up - BIOS locks up initially. So I'm back to a stable system again after pulling those out - time for another OCZ RMA. Also, I found this thread on lotro.com

http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=82477

that helped me realize that some of my crashes and blue screens were caused by 'very high' textures in that game.

It's very hard to narrow all this down and figure out what causes what. There are some non-systems issues out there, though, between the above thread and the Creative one

http://forums.creative.com/cre..._date_ascending&page=1

I am not the only one suffering. Toss in flaky RAM, apparently my new SLI mode presents additional challenges, and just the 'newness of vista' and you're left with a mess sometimes. My reliability monitor in Windows has reduced my system from an 8.89 rating to a 2.49 rating in the last few days. That tells you what HELL I've been through.

I still feel like I'm on course to a stable system, though with the breakthrough of the bad RAM. Last night Orthos ran torture test 8 hours fine. If this continues much longer I'm going back to XP, though.

I'd be interested in what those who've analyzed the memory dumps have to say on all those issues.

I'm pretty involved over here; if they want to post over here they can, but honestly, without someone actually looking at those memory dump files and rendering an opinion, they're all guessing about why those boxes are crashing.

I have reported out that I am 100% stable (as far as system goes) with these drivers

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1713

One conflicting and confusing problem is that Lord of the Rings Online (LoTRO) is not stable at "very high textures" but I consider that to be a non-system issue as most people even with SLI 8800 GTX Ultra are having crashes on Vista 64 rigs - and most other people are , as well. I didn't realize this and it 'clouded' my problems.

Some people don't like these drivers for various reasons but they work great for me. I haven't had a BSOD in a week despite TORTURE tests and doing things that I knew would blow my system up previously. Such as, activating my XBOX 360 wireless headset WHILE playing LoTRO would immediately wind up with a BSOD (but would not in any other game.) That sounds obscure, but, it was my ultimate torture test, and , in LoTRO I can activate the headset in-game with no problem.

Time to do a full system backup!!!!!!!!!
