8800GTS or 9800GTX+

I've not intention to SLI or anything. Just want to get a good card to go with an E8400, mainly for combat flight sims.

Was gearing up to make new system purchase when saw GTX+ coming out next month, and wondering if anyone knows enough about it to recommend waiting or not, and why. Price won't be much higher than I would pay for 8800GTS, and though I hate to wait, would hate to miss out on a good deal, even if performance leap isn't mind blowing. Unless, of course, performance increase is negligible.
 
get a 4850. people are seeing it for as low as $149 today at bestbuy. that is probably one of the top all time price/performance values, certainly the best performance value at this time. check out the sticky 4850 and 9800gtx+ threads here and you'll understand how incredibly hot that deal is.
 
Thanks for the advice, but am planning on sticking with Nvidia as the game I'm gunning for (a WWI conversion of the Combat Flight Simulator 3 engine) runs better with Nvidia cards, I'm told.

The 9800GTX+ is faster in some games, slower in others. It uses more power than the 9800GTX despite the die shrink. It has the 9800GTX dual-slot cooler that is much nicer than the 4850's case heater.

Is it going to be worth $60 more than a closeout 8800GTS? Probably not for most people unless the GTS is "too slow" for your needs. That's up to you not us.

that is almost definitely true with the older (g92) nvidia cards vs the 38x0 series amd cards, but 4850 is legitimately a great card now and is in fact 5-10% faster than 9800gtx across the board. Check with some of our buddies and see if any of them have a 4850 yet, I suspect that it will do better than you think.


having said all of that, I agree with the above posts that you'll probably end up just fine with an 8800gts 512.
