ok so which is better?
8800GTS + e6600
8800GTX + e6400

i play games such as BF2, Bf2142, CS:S, hoping to play Crysis, and other stuff...i dont multi task that much...

the 8800gtx and e6400 is around $50 more though...

which should i get?

I think a 8800gtx with an e6300 is the most price/performance... but if you can get the e6400, by all means!
Generally, at least for this generation of games, they are primarily GPU dependant. That means that you want a better vid card than cpu most of the time. I don't know about dx10 games, but the GPU is exponentially more important.
Don't forget a great monitor to go with it! (see: 24-30" lcds)

GPU is more often than not the limiting factor in games, and on top of that there is a much bigger delta between the GTS and GTX than there is between an E6400 and an E6600. Further if you overclock the E6400 you'll get much better than E6600 performance, whereas, overclocking the GTS will never get you to parity with a GTX.

ok well i guess ill go with the GTX and 6400

i think im gonna pair them up with a dell 2407...anyone know where the cheapest 2407 is?

o ya, wats a good PSU to go along with the 8800GTX?
perferably under $130

A e6400 + a 8800GTX would be a dream combo for me, since it costs almost as much as my entire rig 😛

That powersupply seems great for what you want it to do. You should also look at the Hiper 580 Watts power supplies, also sold on newegg. Either way you should be happy.

That will be a sick gaming setup (get 2GB of good ram and OC the E6400 to 3.2-3.6GHz).

Cheapest 2407's are usually direct from Dell when they have coupons/discounts. Should be no problem at 1920x1200 on that box, I'm jealous.

i don't think right now is a good time to get a DX10 card. at 2560x1600 at 4X AA, it plays every single came perfectly fine (non-SLI). i say either get a 30" monitor or wait til the prices drop a bit or a game comes out that'll actually put the card to work on a 24" screen.

as for PSUs, anand uses the OCZ GameXStream 700w for his gaming benchmarks. it's on newegg for $125AR right now. if you go with the 600w version, you'll be perfectly fine, too. you could also go with enermax (liberty), fortron, enhance, or seasonic. 500w should work but i would personally go with a 600w version to be safe and allow for overclocking

mhmm...so ur saying i should go with 30in and wait till dx10 drops? wat should i get in the meantime for a video card instead of dx10?

i need a super cheap video card that can just run bf2142 w/ a 30in monitor then..

he took a lot of time linking those. I just bought the Crucial 10th Anniversary DDR2-667 all that ram on there is good though.

Edit: gaming is gpu dependent so the GTX would be better but I still would recommend the E6600 with the GTS. since gaming isn't everything 🙂

it seems like when dx10 games actually come out, there will be more dx10 cards to get...so im thinking bout just either getting a 30in w/ a semi-crapy video card or 24 in w/ dx10

wats the cheapest card i can get the will run bf2142 with a 30 in?

well you only listed the CPU and GPU so i was thinking you're upgrading from something...what my point was is that getting a DX10 card is somewhat pointless right now without games that push the card or unless you play at such high resolutions that you need a 30"+ screen. if you do have a rig right now that can handle bf2142 or you just need to upgrade your current rig's gpu to be able to play it, just stick with what you have and upgrade in a few months when the DX10 games come out

30" screens are great for desktop work, where your attention is only focused on one portion of the screen at a time, but they are questionable for PC gaming. If you sit at a normal distance, it will be difficult to see everything that is going on. If you set the monitor back a bit, you are getting an experience similar to a 24" screen up closer, but your hardware has to draw almost 2 times as many pixels. You are also locking yourself in to buying hardware that can push a 4 megapixel resolution by buying the 30 incher, which means you will be upgrading often and it may become quite expensive.

aight...iguess a 24in monitor is fine for me...and maybe ill get a cheap 7900GS or something until dx10 becomes popular..

Totally agree.

Personally, I like my 20in that does 16x12.

ok..would a 7900gs and a 24in dell screen work together well? cuz i plan on buying a cheap video card for the time being so i can get dx10..

That depends on what games you want to play. Keep in mind that the default resolution is 1920x1600. You can play many of the current games (Half Life2 EP1, BF2, Quake4...) at this resolution with a 7900GS as long as you leave AA off. It might not be silky smooth 100% of the time either. As long as you keep the eye candy toned down you will be fine.

Im not much of an overclocker, but wouldn't it be far easier to overclock a CPU than a GPU? If so, get the better graphics card and overclock the CPU. Seems pretty simple actually.
