I think the 7950GT SLI setup will be faster by a good margin in HL2/Source engine and Quake 4 because both those engines/games scale well with SLI (this is from memory, haven't looked at the benchmarks lately).

However, going forward, the 8800GTS will probably be better in most games and you won't have to deal with the pain of SLI/profile etc.

Regardless, a 640MB 8800GTS will give you frame rates over 100 in HL2 engine games at 1920x1200 with AA/AF on anyway, so it's not a big deal.

What exactly is image quality?

What you see on your monitor??

And what does it mean? Is the image from a 7950 blurry or something??

I find it hard to believe that a user with a post count as high as yours doesn't understand the difference in image quality. the 79xx series were plauged with flicking textures in various games, and their AA modes are far inferior to the 88xx series. I am a huge ATI fan due to their better looks textures IMO, but the 88xx series is a head above the 79xx.

Don't even bother with a superclocked card. I'm running my vanilla EVGA 8800GTS 320MB at 615/2000 with no problems. Makes a HUGE difference in Oblivion.

Im now leaning towards not only taking the deal but grabbing one of those 580 core clock 1700 mem clock versions. the bfg would be 90 bucks over my 360 offer, but should help me to avoid any real noticable decrease in performance. right?

First off, with the power of your card, 99% of the time you will be well over 100fps. Why does it matter to you AT ALL if you lose a frame or two every once in a while. Saying that you want nothing but a greater frame rate is ludicrous to suggest.

Next, why are you bothering buying a pre-overclocked version. EVGA insures there cards no matter what you do with them. Why spend the extra $100 or whatever to get someone to pre-overclock it??? Just do it yourself! If you are so concerned about it, then flash the card with a different BIOS so it's default clocks are higher.

The GTS will be hands down better IQ wise. It will swap places performance wise. While it swaps position a lot of the time, it scales much better with AA and AF, games where is swaps are typically over 100fps anyways, and the IQ more than makes up for a few frames here and there.

Get the GTS and be done with it.
