8800GTS 640 vs. 4870 Benchmarks Needed

Anybody have any? Would buying 1 4870 really be better than 2 8800GTS 640? Seems like the extra memory would help me at high resolutions (19 x 12).

Benchmarks would be very helpful.

Thanks

that is what i would do...

Take a benchmark that compares the 8800GT to a 4870, remove 10% of the 8800GT 512MB

mmm... i see only 2GB of ram... my recommendation, get 4GB before you upgrade anything else...
The performance should vastly improve in modern games. like WIC, Supreme Command, Company of Heroes, etc...

You read my mind! I actually plan on upgrading to either 4 gigs or 6 gigs or RAM.

What do you think about 2 8800GTS 640's in SLI? Will it run on a 620HX along with the other stuff in my sig?

i honestly dont know... i am thinking maybe, probably. evga website lists the SLI power requirements for their cards.

I'd think a single 4870 might be similar..but for sure the best bang for the buck is spend ~120 on another 640 since you've already got the board for it.

Yah, I just got a second 8800gts 640 (sitting on my desk waiting to be installed) Cross referencing all the benchmarks I expect to be about as fast as the new top end cards stock. But I know I can get upto gtx speed easy. If you already have the MB and PS for SLi, going SLi as an upgrade path is kinda a no-brainer cost-wise.

Do you know how it did in a game like crysis? I'm trying to get an idea of how well it would run compared to a 4870 (my other option)

Thanks again for the help guys, I appreciate it.

I would think that a single HD 4870 would be just as fast or faster than 8800GTS 640MB SLI, without any of the problems that SLI can pose.

8800GTS 640MB SLI isn't much better than a single 8800 Ultra half the time, and the HD 4870 is much faster than an Ultra.

I've been getting a lot of mixed opinions about whether the 4870 is better or the 8800GTS-sli is better. My GTS640 seems to get roughly equal performance to an 8800GT (maybe a few fps short of the GT) and 2 GT's run quite a bit better than the 4870, so wouldn't 2 GTS's be better than an 4870?

If I get a 8800GTS, I can then afford 2 more gigs of RAM as well, but if I go 4870, I won't be able to right away.

MAMA PAJAMA THIS IS TOUGH!

Its not all about speed. You can turn up AA higher and what not with a 4870. But as I said. Since you've already got the set up for SLI DO IT!

640 GTS SLI +2gb more RAM > 4870

You'd get more bang for your buck if you did that.

And actually you could afford more memory than just 2gb.

4870=300 bucks, your GTS=130+80 (DDR2-800 G.skill 2x2gb)=210
