8800gts 512 worth upgrading?

Looks like lots of new cards have just come out, and now I'm wondering if I should upgrade again. I've got about $400 worth of gift cards that I can use at either best buy or circuit city. It's some kind of american express gift card, and I can't figure out what else to use it on. So is it worth the upgrade and if so what card should I go for?

I have my rig connected to a plasma TV so the resolution is 1920 x 1080.

Just FYI. If it is an AmEx giftcard, you can probably use it w/e AmEx is accepted.

It's not quite as good as a normal amex gift card.

It's called a myreward mychoice card. Otherwise I'd probably buy stuff online since prices are usualyl cheaper and there are more choices.

Honestly, gaming on an 8800GTS 512 at 1920x1200... the only games that have felt "sluggish" to me at max ingame settings (except for AA, I find it useless at large resolutions) are Crysis and Lost Planet (DX10 only, DX9 runs great). Well, Supreme Commander too, but that's my CPU's fault.

I say keep it for now and get something else. Maybe a pile of games?

You can upgrade at that resolution and see improved fps with newer cards. I don't think you will notice much difference unless you went to 4870, 260, 280 or GX2. Anything else and I don't think you will notice a difference.

I'd try and catch a Visiontek 25% off sale and snag a 4870. Its the first card that would be enough of an upgrade over that GTS 512 to be worthwhile. Otherwise a PS3 falls nicely into that $400 range as both a console and Blu-Ray player.

I second the pile of games. You would have to spend a lot of cash on a card that will be over priced at either location or you can get a lot of games and maybe some more memory instead. I don't see in your signature how much memory you have.

You could upgrade to the 4870, but that doesn't mean you should. I'm using a 8800gt for 1920x1200 gaming, and for the most part it runs everything great, but I'm using WinXP with DX9. If you need more DX10 performance, then a 4870 is a good upgrade.

Upgraded from that exact card to a HIS HD 4870 and all I can say is wow. IQ is off the hook and I'm running everything maxxed at 8xAA/16xAF @ 1680 X 1050. Needless to say, I'm extremely happy with the performance boost. Everything is so much smoother now. I really didn't expect to see the improvement I actually did over my old card, but I did. No lie, I was almost in shock after playing a few games after the install. It's literally the best card I've ever owned and that's saying a lot since I've had 11 ATI cards and 13 Nividia cards over the years, so no fanboyism either.

OK, I'll stop now because I hate drooling over hardware like this. :roll:

I don't want to get games since one of my friends works at EA so it's cheaper for him to get them for me. It's like $10 a game.

I have a 8800GT SC and I tried the 4850. I game at 1680x1050 with AA and AF, and honestly at that res the GT was pretty much neck and neck with the 4850 with most games I played, COD4, BF2, Company of Heroes, Crysis. So I returned it. Like chizow said the only card that would be a good upgrade to say a 8800GT or GTS would be the 4870 or above. I'll probably pick that one up soon........
