in the next month or so, i wanna overhaul my rig, everything but the harddrive, case, psu, and dvd drives
i was eyeballing the 9800GTX...but it went up 120$$$ ouch

so i was looking at the 8800GT1gb, now i dont know much about this brand. but it is rather cheap..
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814261012

also if i can find a 9800GTX for 200 is that a better buy for the 512mb version vs an 1gb version on a 8800GT?

Why don't you start thinking about the 4850 for $199 (and sometimes $150)? As fast or faster than a 9800GTX and cheaper to boot.

but then went green when they didnt have an X800pro in stock at best buy so went the 6800GT route

It only runs hot because the fan spins really slow. The same thing was true with the 8800gt when it was released, but it certainly didn't deter many people considering how much performance it offered for the money.

And is easily fixed with a CCC profile ;)

i know that some games are optimized for certain brands...i always thought that was untrue.

The 4800 series does exceptionally well in CoD4 (and dominates it in Crossfire), guild wars I'm not sure about specifically but I suspect it would be more than enough, it runs Crysis well, the 4870 will do better with Crysis obviously as no single card can yet handle that game at 19x12 at very high and remain playable.

They don't run any hotter then most videocards, they just don't get cooled properly. Easily fixed like mentioned above. And some aftermarket coolers can really make it run cool and quiet, so if you have on that fits on the 4850 then your set.

Absolutely imho, especially if you sell the GTS to offset the cost slightly.

would getting a new video card with my current rig be the most realistic right now, as in i d rather not build a new rig? or should i spend the extra money now, get something ballz out, like something with 1gb memory on it?

which i dont see any of...

My favorite ATI partner would have to be VisionTek. Gotta love that Lifetime warranty! Also, isn't GuildWars an "ATI Game"?

No need for 1GB of video RAM for the near future, the memory bandwidth on 4870 is plenty sufficient for anything out today or will be out for 1-2 years that I know about. If you must have 1GB though, I'm sure in a month or two the board partners will be bringing out 1GB versions of the 4870 as well.

That's probably a good plan - the 4870x2s will be out soon, they will also have 1GB of memory, though it will be 512MB for each core.

I think you should wait. You will be CPU limited to a large degree with your current chip, regardless of what card you get. You're even CPU limited right now with your 8800GTS (to some extent).
