I have the system in my sig. I would like to upgrade my single 8800gt to a faster card. I am playing clear sky, warhead, far cry 2 etc.. My 8800gt just doesn't seem to keep up now with higher quality settings. So what would you recommend for $500 or less? 4870X2 maybe? Is it enough of a difference? Thoughts?

I upgraded from an 8800 GT to 4870, since, like yourself, I wasn't getting enough performance in exactly Stalker Clear Sky and Crysis Warhead. But, Stalker still doesn't run like butter ( because it's quite buggy and stupid) and Warhead also has performance issues here and there. But I got a significant boost in other titles, (GRID is playable with 8X AA for example) and I feel much more future proof for FarCry2 and Fallout 3.

My advice to you, is wait just a bit longer, until Nvidia releases their new cards on November. That will surely reduce the prices to all of high end cards and you'll have more options.

Well The 4870x2 is certainly a good increase, as it is the top performer atm.

Don't think you PSU can keep with it, though.

Also the 4870x2 is a crossfire solution in a single card, so if there is no crossfire support, it will perform as a single 4870, wich is still a bump. Probably these days, crossfire and sli are good enough to not cause those problems, but it is still possible..

Other than that you have the 280 GTX which is the faster single chip atm. Other than that the 4870 1gb and the GTX 260 216 are next best thing.

Personally I would go with the 4870 over the GTX 260, but if money isnt the problem the GTX 280 tops those 2.

So, anyway you need a better PSU.

If your budget can go with a good PSU and a 4870x2, and you don't mind any problems a dual GPU can get go for it.

If not GTX 280> 4870 1gb> GTX 260 core 216.

I'm assume you planning on playing at 1920x1200 or higher.

yah you need to have $544, 2-3 months for cashback & mail-in rebate to come to you. cashback goes into a microsoft live account, then to your paypal. MIR gets snail mailed to you in a check.
