8800GT issues :s

So, i ran out to my local best buy and picked up a BFG 880GT OC for my new build. The build went fine untill i tried to boot. No display, whatsoever. No POST, on screen logo, anything, just black and my monitor left searching for a signal(using DVI). Now the kicker is that when i stick in my old ATi X800 PRO, thinking its an issue regarding analog versus digital input to the monitor.

Analog output from the ATi card worked fine and got vista 32 bit installed all fine and dandy. So im pretty much stuck using my ATi card for now until i can figure out how to get a display from my 8800GT.

Ive even gone so far as to run both cards ( :\ ) at the same time to see if windows would pick it up as a display adapter, surprisingly enough, it did. So that rules out the possibility of a bad card. Any help is appreciated.

Abit IP35 PRO
2GB G-Skill ram
Antec truepower trio 430W
Core2 Duo E6750
8800GT
Vista home premium 32 bit

Thanks in advance,

Jake

Which DVI output are you using with the 8800GT? With both my GTS and GT, the top DVI output (furthest from the PCI-E connector teeth, closest to mounting bracket) defaults to primary display. Try using that one if you haven't already.

Just a guess but the 430W is probably a bit low, I just got off the phone with EVGA and they said you probably don't want to run anything lower then 450W minimum.

Did you try running just the 8800gt on analog, I know you said you ran it dvi... not that it would mean anything but I'm just curious.

I would certainly try this, granted my 8800GT only comes with 2x dvi output. Tried using the dvi -> analog to no avail.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, ill try swapping around the dvi outputs when i get out of class ;)

From BFGtech.com reqs on the 8800GT:

425W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 28A or more (Minimum system power requirement based on a standard PC configured with an Intel® Core?2 Extreme X6800 processor)

So you're cutting it pretty close on the psu spec.

What monitor do you have? I know a few people who use Vista (myself included) have had a similar issue. You might try unplugging your monitor's power cable, disconnect the DVI cable, wait one minute, plug the two cables back in, and fire it up. Simple little fix worked great for my issue.

Stop spreading the psu FUD, assuming his PSU is not defective trio430 is more than enough to power his rig.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com...ed-edition-review.html

In canucks review heavily overclocked Q6600@3.5GHz drew only 342W from the wall. Keep in mind that's AC watts, when 430W rating of EW430 PSU is DC watts. Assuming 85% efficiency (which is a bit high to be safe) for the PSU in canuck review, their rig only drew 290W when OPs PSU is rated to provide 430W and is much less powerful. In all the seriousness OP's rig is probably using only half of the power his PSU is rated for.

Well, just got home from class and tried sitching which dvi port i plugged the monitor into which didnt solve anything. Also tried power cycling my monitor and no results.

However one thing i did over look is that the 12v input on the mobo by the cpu is 8 pins, whereas my psu only supplies 4 pins. seemingly small detail, but could that maybe be the source of my issue?

Edited for wall of text.

Use the DVI to VGA adapter and see if you get video?

The digital signal maybe be malfunctioning or your monitor doesn't auto detect the signal options. Check the OSD for any DVI signal input options.

There are rumors of a bad batch of BFG cards running around, anyone else out there experiencing problems with new bfg cards?

All I can say as to the PSU possibility mentioned by others here is that my Seasonic S12 430W handles my 8800GT just fine. I?ve never done any measurements, but I?d bet it even has some juice to spare, not that I?d try to add many more components at this point though.

My basic system:

E6600
4 GB ram - DDR2 667
8800GT - EVGA KO
2x optical
2x hdd
SB X-Fi
Seasonic S12 430W

The rumor is just FUD. I got a BFG 8800 GT OC at a local Bestbuy as well and it's working like a champ, overclocks nicely as well.

I bought 2 BFG from 2 differently BB, one was only able to overclock to 640mhz. Anything above, the system froze during games.

If it's just a signal problem, you should hear the machine booting (beep, disk clicking, and finally Windows log-on sound, etc.) even if you don't get the screen. Is that the case?

Damn I wish I owned power supply stock!

Does your pc beep when it POSTS? Can you hit F8 and boot into safe mode? If so, suspect nVidia/Vista/DVI driver issue. Google forceware screen blanking..

yes, that is exactly what happens, all with a blank screen.

did you try both dvi outs on the card

did you try using it in the 4x slot

did you try messing with bios settings that dictate which display to initialize upon boot? pci/pcie/onboard etc

PSU is fine...I'm running an 8800gt on a 250watt psu in my shuttle.

Well, I think his video card is fine. For some reason the signal from the card doesn't get to the monitor correctly. It has nothing to do with PSU, mobo, video card, etc.. (well, I guess it's possible that BIOS can be responsible but not very likely) I think it's either primary/secondary display error or resolution from previous setting causing trouble.

1. If you have an extra monitor, try hooking up 2 monitors. Meaning you're using both the DVI connectors on the 8800 GT.
2. If your monitor takes more than one input (very likely), you can try #1 with the available connection.
3. Switch primary/secondary while using X800, then switch the card. On first reboot, hit F8 and boot into Safe mode.

Etc....

Yea, it sounds like the Vista/nVidia issue. I did extensive research when it happened to me, contacted nVidia, and they said it's a known intermittant issue with Vista. It seems to have cropped up since 100.xx Forceware release however.

People have found different fixes such as DVI port switches, unplugging/replugging, or using VGA port only. Good luck...

Thanks for all the replies an suggestions. None of them have worked, however, so im just going to take the card back to best buy and get my money back to buy a new ATi card. It just doesnt seem to be worth the headaches and frustration to pursue this any further, and im not going to just wait around with a brand new video card untill nvidia and microsoft can develop a fix.

I would suggest an exchange for a different BFG 8800 GT - even just to see how/if it works on your computer.

Mine works perfectly (so far...), and I am actually blown away with 11600 3DMark06 score, versus ~5900 with my 7950GT.

In your case, I suspect the PCIe bus incompatibility, or just a bad card. It happens...
