Friend's PC had his 8800GT die on him. His Q6600 system is 5 years old so I told him he might as well do a full upgrade but he wants to make it last a little longer so he only wants to replace the card.

So what card that is HD6000/7000 series or GTX500/600 series is the equivalent of the 8800GT?

OR what is the best card he could get that would not be bottlenecked by his system?

He plays games like first person shooters, third person shooters, grand theft auto. He just has a 22" 1050p monitor.

Thanks

I second the 7770, great card for the $.

Will use a good bit less power than the 8800GT, and is a fairly sizable upgrade.

I'm guessing that by "1050P" you are referring to 1680x1050? If that's the case, even better. The 7770 will wobble a bit at 1080p with the latest games at high settings, but 1680x1050 is a good bit less taxing, and will be a perfect fit.

Actually, I just moved up to a 7770 from a 9800gt. It is indeed a good upgrade. Later I also upgraded to 1080 p and it struggles a bit in demanding games, but I am happy with it for the price I paid.

9800 GTX and GTX 250 are pretty much the same GPU as the 8800 GT.

if you are happy with the 8800GT performance, I think a GT 640 would be enough to be a small upgrade..

if you want something faster, look for the 7770, GTX 650 Ti or 7850... maybe even a 660...

I don't think 7770 is worth it for the money unless around $100. 7850 is better for price I think.

Surely some of the cards mentioned would be heavily bottlenecked by an non-oc'ed Q6600 cpu?

He is wondering if a 6570 for $70-$80 (CA) is worth it?

I got a 7770 for 90.00 at micro center, and last time I checked, there were a couple on newegg for 90.00 as well. I think it is quite a bit faster than the 640, especially since the only 640 available retail seems to be the DDR 3 version.

If he plans on doing a system upgrade soon then any money spends now on a ~roughly equal card will have to be re-spent when said upgrade occurs. Its seems like a shame to throw $75 at a low end card when that dollar amount is more than half way to a real one. i would just watch ebay/classifieds/FS-T forums for anything better than a 4670. This link is pretty helpful, I wish AT would put something together that was similar with some sort of unified benchmark-

This. Go ahead and get a card that is bottle-necked.

I know this isn't the FS forum but if he's looking for a card to get by on a budget I have a XFX 5770 not being used I'd ship for $55 as long as its in the continental U.S. It's the dual slot version and with a full gig of ddr5 vram its a little better than his old card and won't be bottlenecked by his q6600. Sorry wasn't trying to intrude as I know this isn't the FS forum, but it could use a good home and would be a nice replacement for your friend with a little improvement at a modest price. Please note I no longer have the original packaging for the card, but would be properly shipped.

If you can find a 650 Ti around $100, it's a bit faster than the 7770. Non-Ti's a little bit behind the 7770.

You mean this?

No. I mainly meant a list that gives a quick look at what gpu is a generally considered to be the equal to whatever other gpu you may be considering. A good chunk of the cards that would be in the running here don't show up in the bench. I assume its because they aren't sold at retail anymore, but it would still be handy to have it cross charted rather than having to go back and dig up the review.

Yeah, that would be handy. I find passmark's alright for comparing across generations, and while pretty unaccurate for comparing two similar cards, it is pretty comprehensive:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

I wouldn't use it to say card A is faster than card B, but at least you can say card A is in the ballpark of card ZY in terms of power.

EDIT: Apparently you can get the 650Ti for around $90 if you do the legwork to get the extra coupon.

since it seems platform longevity is desirable, he can also just step up into a higher end solution (7870, 7950) that has good oc ability and carry that over in the upgrade. with the q6600 at 3.0+ GHz and the relatively low res at 1680x1050, he could certainly crank up the AA and eyecandy in the specified genre of games if desired yielding great benefits immediately.

So, are you shopping from Canadian sources OP? or does that (CA) stand for something else?

I had Q6 with 560 Ti and it was great. All games smooth like butter. Don't listen to people that cry bottleneck about your CPU. Your CPU is fine for gaming, I gained 4fps going from a Q6 @ 3.7ghz to what I have now.

I used to be 39fps starting COD map, now its 43fps and 44,, I dont see 39,, so I gained 4 fps with monster CPU and OC. cuz games dont need the CPU too much,,,,, everything is done with GPU. gl

Depending on what gaming he is doing, a Q6600 can easily be enough. The videocard is definitely holding him back (but just FYI the 8800gt was/still is a great great) but something with more juice can make a difference as well.

But again, it depends on the game. If he plays crap like DOTA2,CS, and probably even skyim (need a good videocard upgrade...and 2gb vram if he goes CRAZY on mods; but fyi i go crazy on mods and am buttery smooth with SLI Gtx460s) then he'll be fine.
But if he is hoping for buttery smooth BF3, then he should upgrade his PC.

I've passed on the recommendations. Thanks for the input. I'll post back what he decides in the end for those who are interested :p

Trying to "match" the performance is a bit pointless. You can use the extra GPU to turn up the eye candy (higher res, FSAA etc). It won't necessarily go to waste, and even if it did, the power consumption would be much lower.

Granted wouldn't want to fork out too much for a replacement card for an old system. You can probably get a 8800 or 9800 off eBay for cheap.

For NVIDIA I wouldn't recommend anything below the 660. Although if you can find a 560 for cheap, that should perform very nicely. Don't know ATI cards very well.
