I've been hunting around for a good deal on a GT with non-reference cooler, based on the theory that if the manufacturer bothers to mount a custom cooler then they will have fixed the card bios error that doesn't ramp the fan speed with load.(I'd rather not deal with ati/riva tuner)

Have the stock 8800GT versions with the new larger reference cooler fan fixed that problem?
And is evga one of the brands with the fix?

Just check the manufacturer website for bios updates, I know EVGA has updates out for the 8800 GT and 8800 GTS 512

If you won't use ATI/Rivatuner then I assume you aren't overclocking... then you would be better advised to pick up a pre-overclocked version.... I'm pretty sure these cards have the fan fixed.

But a better solution would just be to use the Rivatuner function because you can adjust it to better cool your card.
