This is quite the operative word. If the 512 sells for anything under $300 I'll be really, really surprised. I bet we see launch prices of $299 for the 256 and $399 for the 512; especially if they sell well right off the bat. Let the gouging begin!

I'd be supriced if they wouldn't sell 8800 GT 512MB under $300 since there will be new 8800 GTS 640MB in that $3xx price range and GTX (perhaps even Ultra).

i see a lot of speculation here 😛

is it possible that theInq has a *typo*?
--wouldn't it be 14K in 3DMark 06 ... not 05?

otherwise the story would be kinda meaningless ... and they talk pretty consistently about '06 - not '05.
😕
upcoming G92 has some pretty interesting performance numbers. All we can say is life sucks if you recently bought a GTX.
--life would not suck for recent GTX owners it was really 14K in "05" - they beat that easily ... otoh, if is is 14K in 3DMark06 we have some real performance increases coming to the mid-range.

i think the game is built-in ... there IS one with 3DMark05 😛

The 14-15k score IS 3dmark 05, not 06 for the GTs.

In 06 w/ AA/AF it was 85% of 8800GTX.

Btw, I'm curious why the new 640mb GTS would be set higher than the current GTX, if they will continue to sell GTX/Ultras.

Additionally, we know the 512mb 8800GTs are 1.5GHz x 112 stream processors. The 640mb will have 128SPs like the 8800GTX, and even if we assume its also clocked at 1.5GHz, it's not necessarily indicative of superior performance because the GTX will have a 384 vs 256bit bandwidth lead. Some games are more bandwidth limited after all, then shader limited (i.e, RPGs).

Astrallite:
Will they keep those GTX's and Ultra's on sale and for how long? I mean that 8800 GT has TDP value of 110W so there would be enough room for new GTS and GTX at least when it comes to power consumption (Old GTS has TDP value of 143W, current GTX has whopping 185W for TDP value).

So could it be one possibility that they would launch also new GTX with higher core and memory clocks compared to GTS? (This would of course depend on how far those best G92-chips go? If they use those not so well clocking units for new GTS and those better chips for GTX?)

This new GTS will be 320-bit card

When are the 512 mb 8800 GT's due?

a bit slow posting but anyways, on a core2 OC'd to 2.8G, default gpu/ram, vista32bit 512M version
3DMark2006 10xxx
3DMark2005 16xxx
getting mine for around $220 mark end of the month

I've read this whole thread and checked most of the links...and I'm still confused. These are not direct quotes, but an example of why my head hurts.

"More powerful core but less shaders"
"G80 has better 112 shaders than the G92's 93"
"DDR4 memory works against the vector something-something."

😕

I realize that until a REAL benchmark test is done by a REPUTABLE source we won't know for sure, but can someone answer this question:

As it stands now, is the 8800GT 512MB card a faster, better card than a 7900GTO 512MB at stock speeds? If so, why and if not, why not?

I want an upgrade as I play at 1920x1200 and I like eye candy. But, I'm not spending $500 on a 8800GTX right now with new high-end stuff coming in a month.

Thanks!!! :beer::gift:

Not even the most pessimistic rumours say that 7900 GTX Would win 8800 GT..not to mention 7900 GTO

@ MichaelD: 8800GT 512 (from specs alone) will flat blow the doors off of the fastest 7 series card ever made. With a side of cole-slaw.

Even 7950 GX2?

 Wow, all that and a bag o'chips too, huh? The (old) 8800GTS320 is faster than my 7900GTO but only 320MB of memory doesn't cut it at 1920x1200.

The 8800GT is supposed to be less than $300,right? Holy crap, sign me up!!!! When are they supposed to come out?

*edit*

Thanks too, Rusin. 🙂

MichaelD:
They are due to come out October 29th..that's less than two weeks. New version of 8800 GTS 640MB is due to come out November 19th.

8800 GT 512MB should cost $250
8800 GT 256MB should cost $200

There are also rumours about 8800 GS (which would basically utilize those crappiest G92-chips.. those chips that doesn't work with 112SP's (would use 96)well and doesn't handle those clock frequencies that were wanted). This 8800 GS would be needed to close that gap between 8600 and next card which would be bigger since 8800 GT will be more powerful than 8800 GTS 320MB..and that GTS-version is EOL-product already. Then perhaps pull G92-8800 GS cards out when they'll get G98-chips up and running

Anyone reputable taking pre-orders? Better performance and same amount of RAM as my 7900GTO for $250? I'd pay up front now.

MichaelD:
Not yet. Here in Europe few shops had 8800 GT prices already, but they have now removed them. Prices were like 200?-210? which is like $280-$295. This very low price in Europe since cheapest 8800 GTS 320MB cards are sold in Germany and they have $340 for price. (in Finland there's easy to make price comparison in computer products: In here 1$ = 1? (in real life it's 1,415$ = 1?). At least memory is cheap here: Cheapest 1024MB 800MHz DDR2 chips costs like $25-$30.

i was right the 3DMark05 scores are messed up ... the latest from theInq:

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/.../2007/10/17/g92-scores

THERE WERE SOME problems with the G92 numbers we put out a bit ago, namely they were 3DMark05. The problem, this bench is seriously CPU bound at default resolutions.

So, to fix that, here are 3DMark06 numbers a a bunch of different resolutions, and a bit more about what it means.

[*****See chart*******
from 6629 to 11426 depending on resolution/AA-AF]

The scores are a little higher than Theo said, basically putting G92 and RV670 right on top of each other, at least at 1280*1024. Since NV launches first, I would expect ATI to bump up the clock in the intervening weeks to pip the G92 by a bit. In this game, victory is much easier for the second to launch.

The interesting bit is not with the near future launching cards, but with the Q1 launching big boys. If the base parts are more or less equal, and they numbers play out the way I expect them to, look for ATI to take the first lead in the high end since the R4xx cards were all the rage.

NV is taking the same old route, ATI is turning hard left, who will win? Right now it is a tie, and based on OEM orders, an ATI clean sweep. The real fight is in Q1/08, right now we are only seeing the initial salvos.

That's OK with me. Figure the high-end cards will come out at the end of Q1. By end of Q3 they'll actually be semi-affordable with MIRs and such.

So, for the next 5-6 months I'll be VERY happy with my 7900GTO-beating, 8800GT 512MB, thanks very much. 🙂

I plan on getting one as soon as possible (AFTER real reviews, though), even if I have to pay a $20-$30 early adopter fee.

building a system this week, will be PCI-E and I have no PCI-E card. Would love to wait for this to hit the streets so I can get it, but that would mean a few weeks with no PC, and to top it off the price is still up in the air. PC Club up the street has an Evga 7800gs, I could buy that and do the Step-Up they offer. Do they credit what you paid for the card you're trading in, or is it just what it's going for at a place like Newegg? The 7800 I'm looking at is like $180 for the superclocked version.

if the 512 version is less than $300 I'm going to be all over it!
