8800GT & Accelero Question

I just recently upgraded my computer from an xp2000 based system. I had an Accelero S2 sitting around so I installed it on my 8800GT just to test it out but I didn't expect much. I also ordered an S1 & I should be recieving it tomorrow.

On my slightly overclocked 8800GT (675 / 975), I am getting 49c load & 35c idle with the S2 & 120mm Yate:

My question is do you think I would see a increase in cooling performance by installing the S1 when I receive it tomorrow or should I just leave well enough alone & return/sell the S1 unopened?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Well... The S1 is much better because it has 4 heatpipes instead of 2... If you already installed the S2, you should be able to take it off and install the S1. If you are happy with your temperatures, though, then don't.

I have no worries about installing the S1... I'm just questioning if the S1 will give me $30 dollars improvement over my current temps. I could see it going down maybe 3-4c on the load. But, if the S1 will bring it down to 39-40c load... then I don't think there is any question that I will install it.

What are your ambient temps? If they are fairly normal (68-75F) than I'd just stick with your S2 since your temps are so good. I have an S1 and two 120mm fans on my 8800GT and with ambient temps at 72F I get 49-50C load temps playing Crysis.

Right now my computer is running:

28c system
30c video card ambient

The 49c load & 35c idle was measured about 30 mins ago while running Orthos & Atitool for 1 hour together. Thank god for the San Diego weather =). My only concern is that MAYBE in the summer time when the heat might climb a little that the S1 would be a good insurance policy to have for my video card even if it would decrease my load temps by only 4-5c.

Interesting... so the S2 works with the 8800GT? You have that 120mm Yate Loon zip tied to it or just near it?

I'm pretty dismayed that the formerly $20-or-less S1 is now pretty much at $30. If the S2 can work...

Anyone else try it? DaSinical1, have you tried it without a dedicated fan and relying only on case ventilation?

Yes the S2 works with the 8800GT & I zip tied the Yate to the heatsink. I also did try it without a fan using only my case ventilation & I was getting about 56-57c load. Mind you I have 1 140mm intake, 1 120mm intake, 2 140mm exhaust & 1 120mm exhast on my CM690.

Wow you guys have awesome temps. and DaSinical1 it's with a S2? I have an Accelero S1 Rev. 2 w/ no fan on my XFX 8800GT and it IDLES at ~ 55C. It's in a cramped SilverStone SG03 though.

I guess a case with 3 140mm & 2 120mm fans makes a difference. Also, the San Diego weather might help out too =).

My SG03 has two 120mm intake fans on the front, the PSU's 135mm fan for the CPU + exhaust and an additional 90mm exhaust fan on the back. That's all I have "cooling" my system.

I like my S1 Rev. 2, but if the smaller S2 really does work pretty well with the 8800GT I may just switch to it so I get two of my SATA ports back (which my s1 blocks).

Wow, my stock reference cooler doesn't seem to keep it that cool. Maybe I'll just do that, an S2 with an undervolted fan.

The S2 is very effective when the case has negative pressure. I also really believe that the Shin-Etsu G751 really helped my temps. I applied AS5 5 different ways to try & get lower temps but I was consistently getting 3-4c higher temps then when I used the G751. The key is applying the G751 correctly which isn't too hard when you practice.

How do I check if my case has negative pressure? I used the MX2 that was pre-applied to my S1.

Just make sure that your case has more exhaust then intake & you will have negative pressure. I also forgot to mention that my fan on my Accelero is undervolted to 9v using a resistor so it is almost completely silent.

Islandboi,

55c idle is a high for the Accelero S1. I think its because you don't have negative pressure on your case. It looks like your case has more intake then exhaust. I don't think that you are getting fresh air being sucked through the vent.

Should I reverse both of my front 120mm intake fans so they're blowing air outwards / sucking air out of the case instead? If I do that, every fan in the case would be sucking air out of the case.

Right now the front 120mm fans are are sucking fresh air into the case and every fan in the back of the case (the PSU exhaust fan and the 90mm fan) are sucking air out of the case.

No don't reverse them... Maybe downvolt them with a resistor or fan controller... maybe get a higher rated 92mm for your exhaust. Maybe mod your case for a 120mm exhaust or just cut a 120mm blow hole in the top of your case. Or just put a fan on your accelero? I would think even a small 80mm fan would work wonders for you.

Maybe I'll pick up a couple of S2 units. Just waiting for DaSinical1 to report back with results on the S1 (if he did receive it today and choose to install it).

First two places I checked (SVC and CensusPC) has the S2 for $16.99. I'd probably go with whoever had cheapest shipping.
