8800GT @ 800MHz/1800MHz comparable to

all the new cards beat the 8800gt regardless of overclock. The 4850 is the slowest of the new cards and is about where the 8800Ultra sits in terms of actual game performance.

Do remember you can overclock any of the new cards as well. The 4850 would likely be the closest though.

I'm just trying to extend the life of the GT I have for a bit. I'm set on a 4870 1GB (mainly because I can use my current waterblock on it and can't on the 260 and I like my computer to be quiet) as my next card but I don't want to spend $290 CAD on it. I'm thinking I'll get whatever I can out of this GT with a volt mod and then hopefully in the February/March timeframe the prices would have come down some more and then I'd buy it. Good/Bad plan?
 
I had my 8800 GT volt modded to 800/1980/1950 ( core/shader/mem ) and in 3dmark 2006 it was as fast as a 9800 GTX. I didn't test it with games, but I guess it was comparable, more or less, with a 4850 ( a bit slower maybe).

Thanks...I guess that's what I'll do then...4850 performance is not too bad and the only game that I've played that this GT has struggled in so far has been Clear Sky.
 
Just make sure to have proper cooling, since volt modding really increases temperatures across the card.
 
Why would you get rid of your 8800gt?
You have avery good overclock on it.Are you having problems playing any games now?

I just dont see any need to upgrade unless you have the itch and can't keep your current hardware which should be adequate on lower resolutions

No I don't have that overclock YET. I have around 730/1800 with no mods. I'm shooting for over 800 on the core with the voltmod. And yes I've decided to wait until about February/March to upgrade.
 
is what you have now the max you can get on your card?
I was able to reach 770 on a pny 8800gt before.

My bfg 9800gtx oc overclocks like a monster tho on stock air cooling and it doesn't even get too hot 804-2000-1200 is what I can get on a 9800gtx

Yep that's max I can get without lockups or artifacts.

No. bit-tech did a review recently on the XFX 9800GT XXX edition (670/1600/1950) and found it played more in the range of the 4850 than the 4830. The OP's card at 800/1800 would do an even better job than this factory OC'd card.
 
The popular (AAA) titles will be playable on an 8800GT for years to come since it surpasses whatever hardware the consoles have.

thats not always the case because pc versions are sometimes beefed up.
 
Or poorly ported which is mostly the case sadly.

To the OP, basically your card is right around the HD4850 level, maybe slightly slower overall.
