8800gt @ 650/970 = 8800GTS (g92)?

as the title states, if i OC my 8800gt to those speeds above (my defaults are 650/900) will i essentially get the performance of an 8800gts or 9800gtx? i'll be gaming at 1680x1050... with MAX AA/AF + other quality settings. VSync Off


i'm aware that the gts and gtx have more shaders, but theres not much i can do about that.

Not really, because the 8800 GTS and 9800 GTX has 16 shader processors in plus over the 8800 GT, so even if you overclock it to their stock clocks, the GTS/GTX will be faster. I guess if you really increase clocks sky high over the GTS, you'll manage to overcome the lack of shaders and get the card on par or even faster, depends how high you'll manage to overclock it.

The 9800 GTX on the other hand will be harder to touch since it has very high clocked DDR3 and the 8800GT doesn't really likes going above 2000 mhz on vram. So even if you take the core and shaders clocks way higher then GTXs, the ram frequency will take you back. So, I guess the GTS is attainable but the GTX is a tougher call.

EDIT: The 9800 GTX has DDR3 at 1100 mhz, not 1000 mhz like you've stated.

oh yea, i thought i saw 2000 somewhere.

i'm not going to be Ocing like crazy because i don't see any difference in gaming when playing @ stock speeds and @ those higher clocks. overclocking a video card doesn't make or break any game

Not entirely true, Louisssss. When I OC'd my 8800GTS 320, it meant the difference between Lost Planet running smoothly at 1280x1024 or sluggish at 1600x1200 -> smoothly at 1600x1200. (all DX9, DX10 even kills my new G92 GTS at high res high settings)

perhaps it might help some with some older video cards, but most/all modern video cards (of their time) dont offer much "playability" improvements with overclocking..

i've yet to see someone with a revelation such as: "my stock clocked 3870 or 8800gt couldn't play cod4 @ 19x12, but it was smooth as silk after overclocking it"

You can see a difference but only if you manage to overclock it very high, and mostly in very intensive games, those that the card tends to struggle at stock.

My volt modded 7600 GT was a totally different card when I kept it at 740/1600 versus 560/1400. Right now I'm not seeing much of difference with my overclocked 8800 GT, probably because I play games that run smooth, so the difference between 90 fps versus 110 fps is not "observed" by my eyes.

I bought a BFG overclocked one and overclocked on Green safe status for my BFG 8800 GTS (G92) 512MB graphics card.

Core 740mhz, anything above 740mhz would be yellow and runs stable at 800mhz
Shader 2512mhz, anything above this would be yellow
Memory 2116mhz, anything above this would be yellow

I say, it's not a bad deal.

Super fast for only $254 - $30 rebate = $224. I trust BFG factory overclock as I can push it even further and BFG Quality Assuance is really good and has good reputation.

I guess you are overreacting a "bit". No way those shaders are at 2512 mhz, not on phase change cooling or with a severe volt mod.

And yes, what the hell "would be yellow" means and why do you have to repeat it over and over again?????
