Lift the heat sink off and clean the GPU and mating surface on the heat sink. Apply fresh layer of non-conductive thermal paste/compound and put the heat sink back on. My GT had a bad contact (or too much thermal paste) and my temp went down by 7~8C just by doing that.

As far as aftermarket cooling there are all sorts of options such as the Accelero S1 which can easily lop off a dozen or two degrees C off your temps...and this without a fan even...and can be had for less than $30.

Although if single slot is important to you, well then you shouldn't be overclocking :p

its just a defective unit... i got a GTS that was running that high (evga) I returned it and got a replacement that is 30c lower... This one obviously has a badly seated heatsink. RMA or reseat it yourself (if you don't mind voiding warranty)

sigh, more uninformed information from you....

The GTS reference design has a two slot cooler, so if it was running that high it may have been broken for you, but upwards to 90C on a single slot GT is not uncommon.

A lot of people had it yes.. but a lot of people were getting 60c on their GT as well..
The following exist:
1. A revised fan which is bigger.
2. Revised BIOS that increases fan speed.
3. MANY GT cards come with badly seated heatsinks and cause higher temps... not abnormal because its so common, but others have been getting lower temps on their single slot GT. (I can't call 60c low, its really hot in itself... but relatively speaking.. and video cards are more tolerant...)

PS. if you don't have something nice to say then zip it. Rude remarks are uncalled for.

EDIT: so yea, if he RMA's now he will get a card with a new larger fan and a revised bios for increased fan speed... as well as probably a properly seated heatsink, since some people HAVE been getting 60c (or so they said) with their v1 fans and v1 bios...

It's been pretty cool here in LA.

I have my card OC'd to 702/1774/987.... and in 3dmark06... load temps hit a high of 72C. Oddly enough... the stock clocks (625/1566/900) hit a high of 71C.

Ocing only increases my temps by only 1C.

But Stalker on load gives me temps up to 83C. Stalker seems more stressful than 3dmark06.

Only problem is that a heatwave can send my card to 90+C.

Tigersty1e, what happens if you run the atitool stability test?

Just running 3dmark or gaming leaves my 8800GT at about 43C (29C idle). atitool stability test can push that into the 50s!

I don't like ATI Tool... especially the OCing portion.

You're card idles cooler than it is in my room on a hot day? ... crazy.

water cooler?

I have the eVGA and it gets up to about 74C when stressed at slightly higher than stock speeds, but I never hear the fan.
