8800GT --> 4850 Worth It?

Just curious if people think its worth it to go from an 8800GT (512mb) to a 4850 (512mb)?

Is the 4870 worth an extra $100?

It'd go with a core2 E8400 (not o/c) with 8gb of ram and 1680x1050 resolution.

Everything I'm currently playing is running fine (so the obvious choice is to hold off), but there are some great title comes down the pipe for xmas (fallout, warhammer online, spore..)

Are you sure that those games will actually 100% release by then? Are you also sure that an 8800gt will not be fine at that resolution? Neither is certain yet.

Why not just wait for whatever is a good deal at Xmas-time? 4 months can be an awfully big change in tech/prices, depending on circumstances.

It was about a month ago, when you could sell your 8800gt for the same price as a 4850... thats what i did, well i actually made a small profit 🙂 but got lucky with a brand new card from a RMA.

But the 4850 runs hot as balls and i dont see a difference...

The 4850 runs hot by default and if you are looking at gpu-z. If you setup a fan profile it gets much cooler but the heat stays the same. In fact the 8800gt is on equal terms producing heat.

Also the 4850 is a decent card, if you can find one for 150$ then go for it and sell the 8800gt.

Not worth it. The minimum is 4870. Wait to upgrade when those games are released.

That's what I think too. When you have a game that you want to play that runs poorly on your current card, is when I upgrade. Otherwise you begin upgrading just for the sake of upgrading which becomes expensive.

I was in the same boat as you. Had a perfectly good working 8800GT that ran everything I had at 1680x1050 perfect. But curiosity got the better of me and I bought a 4850. Well after testing it out on all my games and some 3d benchmarks I decided I didn't need it. It was faster than my 8800GT but only by a handful of fps. It ran alot hotter and was louder. My 8800GT with a passive s1 cooler on it was dead silent and my temps were like 40 idle and 55 load. Keep your GT for now and when xmas comes around then decide what you want to do. Heck who knows maybe your GT will run those new games just fine....

The 8800GT was released less than a year ago. If games released in the same year run poorly on it...then we really have a problem with the state of gaming on PC's. I'm sure games like Fallout and Spore will run fine on a 8800GT.

I was in a similar situation too. Had an 8800GT but then upgraded to 4850. Spent a lot of time dealing with the fan issue which has not been fixed yet. Got a marginal improvement on paper, but in practice, I didn't notice any significant improvement that made me feel like it was money well spent, and I got a good deal on the 4850 at $150 at BB too!

Anyway, hold off. You need to get either the 4870 or GT260 at a MINIMUM to feel like it's an "upgrade" and not a sidestep! Wait till Xmas to see what games are out and what their demands will be. Heck, you may even want to keep your 8800GT as a dedicated Physx card by then to pair along with perhaps a GT260+ by then.

I knew it was a side grade, but since ATI got their aspect ratio scaling working and nvidia's never worked for me I was eager to switch. I just didn't want to lose performance doing so. I sold the 8800GT a little late to get the "free upgrade" out of it though, but it covered the better part of the cost.

I've got an 8800gt and play @ a much more demanding res(1920x1200) and will not be upgrading to anything less then a 4780x2. I don't even think a single 4870/gtx 260 is worth it
