8800GT ($265) vs. HD 3870 ($225)

Well my 2 options are 8800GT Superclocked for $265 (pre-ordered) or a HD 3870 for $225 - both prices are after shipping. I plan to use the card for 3-4 years...which do you guys think I should get?

Also, any word on how much and when the new 8800GTS are coming?

how much do heat/noise bother you? If you have a very quiet system or want to exhaust the heat out of the case then you'll probably be happier with 3870. If you are only interested in perf then the 8800gt is the obvious choice as long as you don't mind the (potentially interminable) wait.

im not too worried about heat/noise...worst come to worse..ill just use the lifetime warranty.. ^^ I guess.

only thing about the 8800GT - I wonder how low the prices will be at the end of December...if they will be around $200 or so..like some reviews say..i will be kinda mad i bought it at $265...

You saw the performance yourself what do you think?

3-4 years is a long time in the world of video cards.

what video card do you have now?

where you getting 8800GT for $265... lowest i have seen currently for $299. Till Nvidia don't slove the supply issue , i don't see the price going $200.

i had a x800xl but it died after 1.5 years..warrent didnt cover it anymore and i didnt want to buy a new graphic card..so i bought a Geforce 6200, a few months ago, for like $20 or $25 and unlocked 4 extra pipelines and oc-ed it to 6600GT specs.

Yeah you definitely need a card. 6200. 🙁 I thought 6200 pci-x can't be unlocked. I know the AGP did but not PCI-E ones. 6200 to 6600gt? Now you are delirious because you want performance so bad.

8800gt is the faster card no question. All prices will drop anyway and that AMD released their cards 8800gt should go down in price long as they have a steady supply of 8800gt. AMD will also go down some as well. I suspect.

id say probably the GT. i think the 3870 / 3850 are somewhat higher priced right now because they are new, so i bet once the 8800gt and 3870 reach full production that the 3870 will proably be the first to drop in price and have rebates and such.

at lunch nvidia had "50k in etailers and hundreds of thosands at stores and system builders"
And ATI had at lunch "200k units total"

Both of them sold out the day they were lunched... with new cards arrived at major etailers DAILY or sometimes TWICE A DAY. Selling out within hours of listing more stock.

If you check an etailer every hour you WILL get a card within a day or two.

Anyways from everything I see the stock GT is priced at 270$ on many etailers and the 3870 at 240$ BUT can be found for as low as 220$... both of which are out of stock usually unless you get lucky and check right after a new shipment was listed. At your prices the GT is a MUCH better deal, as it significantly outperforms the 3870. But at 220 vs 300 then the 3870 is a better deal.. it really all comes down to how much you pay.

Me, I am waiting for prices to further drop or for the new GTS to come out (it is slated to cost 300$ and outperform the ultra... maybe I will nab one before it gets price gouged)

Or maybe I will just get a 3850, use it for 6-9 monthes, and then buy a new card. I haven't made up my mind yet.

The 8800GT is roughly 10-15% faster, right ? If the price difference is 15%, then it's a tossup between the ATI HD3870 and the 8800GT if you ask me. Then it comes down to how much you want to spend. Not to forget, the ATI cards have features the Nvidia cards do not, like 5.1 hdmi sound or something ? I'm also confident that new drivers will boost performance a little, making the HD3870 'only' 5-10% slower.

I went with a 8800GT b/c I wanted to buy from EVGA and get their great customer support and warranty.

Unfortunately, the majority of ATI partners provide crappy customer support and limited warranties. My poor HIS X1900XTX, may it RIP.

Why would new drivers bring bigger improvement? It's not like these HD3800-cards would be new kind of cards.. merely dieshrink from HD2900-line. Last time when ATi did this dieshrink thing their cards performance were almost at it's best right after start.

One could think that 8800 GT's performance will get better when it's drivers matures.. it's new card as well.

To OP, for someone that was sure glad to see ati "fail", a few days, its interesting to see you even consider the new ATI card now. Personally, if you have one on pre-order stick with it. I had a 3870 with NCIX and canceled it to get it from new egg. My card order processed, but i just move and they are having a hard time valadating my shipping address. Basically I had to call my bank, and i have to call new egg this morning once their office opens up to call them back. My point to this story is i had a card locked up, and wanted to get it for 30 bucks cheaper, and now who knows if I will get a card or not.

I just noticed he is comparing a SUPERCLOCKED GT to a STOCK 3870. That widens the gap that already exists between the stock GT and the stock 3870...

I don't think there is a point to preordering anything. You are better off waiting until some is in stock... by then the price should be more attractive OR there might be a better choice for you. And you wouldn't have to wait a month without a card OR the money you pay for it.

newegg started sucking about 6 monthes ago... when they started charging restocking fees (on any returns, not returns missing items... missing items result in your return being REJECTED rather then a fee), and now they are selling all the new video cards as NON REFUNDABLE... You bought the card and it doesn't fit in your case? well, sell it on ebay cause we aint taking it back.. not even with the 15% restocking fee.

Also newegg used to be 50-70% of the cost at frys... now most of their items are the EXACT same cost (down to the cents)... usually with free shipping, and you don't pay tax... a few items are a LITTLE cheaper....

Anyways, don't buy in newegg no more.
