how much do heat/noise bother you? If you have a very quiet system or want to exhaust the heat out of the case then you'll probably be happier with 3870. If you are only interested in perf then the 8800gt is the obvious choice as long as you don't mind the (potentially interminable) wait.

i had a x800xl but it died after 1.5 years..warrent didnt cover it anymore and i didnt want to buy a new graphic card..so i bought a Geforce 6200, a few months ago, for like $20 or $25 and unlocked 4 extra pipelines and oc-ed it to 6600GT specs.

Why would new drivers bring bigger improvement? It's not like these HD3800-cards would be new kind of cards.. merely dieshrink from HD2900-line. Last time when ATi did this dieshrink thing their cards performance were almost at it's best right after start.Originally posted by: MarcVenice
The 8800GT is roughly 10-15% faster, right ? If the price difference is 15%, then it's a tossup between the ATI HD3870 and the 8800GT if you ask me. Then it comes down to how much you want to spend. Not to forget, the ATI cards have features the Nvidia cards do not, like 5.1 hdmi sound or something ? I'm also confident that new drivers will boost performance a little, making the HD3870 'only' 5-10% slower.
