Would a 8800gs be much of an upgrade with my cpu. The 8800gs seems so cheap now that it would not cost much to get one if I sold my 1950Pro. Any links to benchmarks between the two would be helpful. I game at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 depending on the game.

The 8800 is a newer generation product than the 1950, and has a slight benefit of more RAM (384 vs 256), but as you noted, the rest of your system is likely to hold it back.

For what it's worth, the Radeon 3850/512MB and 3870s can be had for almost the same price. Similar performance range, even more RAM, and you could stick with the same brand.

I doubt that a dual-core 2.6GHz cpu is going to bottleneck an 8800GS or even a 4850.

8800GS would be a nice upgrade from an x1950pro. I suggest you consider a 3870 also, which will hold up better for newer games and/or higher resolutions and doesn't cost much more ($125AR).

Of course, you may be best off just waiting for another week or two to see how these lower-end cards react to the 4850 launch. I have a feeling there will be some shake-outs resulting in very good deals.

The reason for the 8800gs instead of the ATI cards is because of this. I figure I could sale my card plus the ram and almost break even. Does that sound about right?

That's a very good deal. You can't get any better than that.

Overclocked 8800gs can easily match 8800gt or get very close to it.

The 8800GS price looks great, but if you want to hold on a bit longer with your future investment, you should go for the HD 3850 512MB and overclock it to HD 3870. It's design is more futureproof and is faster than the 8800GS
