8800 GTX or Playstation 3

I just thought I'd ask. I will be able to get one or the other soon. Which one would you get? I have a 7900 GT (512 )at the moment, but I will be upgrding to Vista soon too. Will the 8800 make that much of a diference to Vista?

Well it's not only to run Vista, I game a lot too. I want them both, just havn't decided which to get first. I just wondered if DirectX 10 would really make that much of a diference to Vista.

if i had a PC that could make good use of an 8800GTX then I would get that, if not i would opt for the PS3 and put linux on it.

u do not need a 800gts to run vista you're just lying to yourself.
1. vista isn't even out yet and is nowhere near mature
2. u go not need a $400 video card to run an operating system
3. did u need a x850xt to run Windows XP when it first came out? thought so...

the question between 8800grs and ps3 is totally up to you. console gaming, or PC gaming... thats all it comes down to, i'd buy the ps3 and live with w/e PC u have now until vista comes around and matures

PS3 for sure. your current video card is still decent, and if you get a PS3 you'll get to play games like Resident Evil 5 and Final Fantasy 13......

I vote for the PS3.

Then wait until the mid-range DX10 cards come out and upgrade your video at a more reasonable cost. What you have now wil hold you over until then. (6-9 months?)

The ps3 will probably fall a lot in price fast as the cost of blue laser diodes comes down a lot so I think it'd be wise to wait on that.

If you need a new boat anchor, get a PS3.

Seriously...

It depends on how much time you'll spend gaming on the PS3 vs. your PC.

I think his question is, "I have heard Vista is a resource hog and running the same games (that I do on XP) will be slower in Vista than it was in XP."

I would wait for a 'Vista vs XP Gaming Performance' (using the same hardware) comparison that lots of sites will inevitably carry come January 30th. And I'm thinking it won't look good for a little while thanks to immature drivers. But it will be deal-breaker bad, I have no idea.

If you meant what DirectX 10 will do for gaming. this is just my personal opinion but DirectX 9 wasn't fully exploited until Half-Life 2 showed up in 2004...and we know what Oblivion did for DirectX 9 in 2006. So far, most DX10-ready games look like they will ship with DirectX 9 rendering with maybe a patch released later - that will probably add a few superficial tweaks here and there (think the Far Cry SM 3.0 patch).

What kind of games do you play? The PC has lots of quality FPS and RTS games (that don't feel that great on a console). And Sony-exclusive games you like? Because apart from few notable exceptions (I think PS3 and Gran Turismo comes to mind), the industry does seem headed for cross-platform games. I would personally go for the PC route.

I would go with the PS3. It may have nothing but horrible games now, but there are going to be better games for it soon.

And I don't think that you will notice any difference in Vista (the os, gaming excluded) between an 8800GTX and your current card.

Refrain from posting.

BTW, The X850XT came out almost 4 years after Windows XP.

Get the PS3. I have one, and could not be happier. I would chose it over an upgraded video card any day. Especially considering you already have a pretty damn good card. Like others recommended, just wait until mid-range DX10 cards come out some time in '07 and grab yourself one of those.
