I'm in the process of "stepping up" to a GTX from a GTS. The GTS is a great card and played well even at 2056x1563 or whatever that res. is. But had to go 2x AA for some games and certain effects and some multiplayer maps especially really drug the fps down. For $150 fee for the step up I can game at max. res. now and hopefully keep the card for a year or 2 and still go 1900x1400 for most newer games. But in your situation I would wait and see what comes from both sides in the next 2 months.

I'll probably end up with a GTX for my next build (assuming R600 doesn't blow it out of the water at a similar price point), but it's not like the GTS isn't a good buy. I mean by the time games are unplayable on the GTS, you'd be better off with a newer gen of card anyway. At that point, a GTX won't be a revolutionary step up...it will just breathe a little more life into the games that were unplayable on a GTS.

Ugh, sorry about that. Wrong reply button.

Anyway, I usually buy cards for features rather than raw performance, because I can barely tell the difference between 4x and 8x AA and such if the game is good and immersive. So I'd rather upgrade from a GTS to Shader model 23 and DirectX 12. Only reason I'm upgrading from my 7900 at all is because Vista ate my 7900 for breakfast and now it barely works. :/

I definitely think 8800 GTX is worth extra $150, but if your monitor is @1280, then it could be different. Either way, I wouldn't wait for 8900 series cards. They won't be out till summer. ;)

Yeah especially now with the R600 delayed again till who knows when. Nvidia probably isn't feeling too rushed to get the 8900 series out.

The GTS does offer good bang for the buck, esp at lower resolutions. But the GTX is truly an excellent single card solution.

IMO, it's well worth the extra cash...

You will need a GTX for 1920x1200 for today's/tomorrow's AAA titles. Especially if you want AA/AF.

Actually that's a very nice article regarding this issue.. One of the best I've seen. I wish they had included more games.. Though the picture is clear.. Even at a gpu limited resolution with full filters a cpu intensive game, will always cause variations..

Regarding the question of the OP, I believe that 32 more SP will make the difference in D3D10.. You can always o/c your GTS for now, and be just fine with d3d9 but if you plan on keeping your card a little longer for "d3d10" games then I'd definitely suggest the GTX..
O/Cing your GTS@GTX just won't cut it as the case is with d3d9.
Due to the "nature" of d3d10 API ,the GTX will be able to show the real potential and performance difference from the GTS..

but who cares bout average fps benchies when ur cpu sucks in min fps whatever gpu u may have..

Call me lame but I have a 17" CRT and still game at 1024x768. If I get an LCD monitor I may go up to 1280x1024. An 8800GTS 320MB would be good enough for me I think to max out all my games.

At least until 2009, but oh boy, are you missing out. ;)

For that system(pent d @3.36) I'd wait for a cheaper card. mabe the 8600 series And use the rest for another gig of ram.

Here's the plan:
1) New motherboard (DS3) and 1GB stick DDR2-800 (giving my father these for his new system).
2) Core 2 Duo (with Tuniq Tower 120).
3) New video card (Looking at the 8800GTS 320).
4) Matching 1GB stick as in 1.

Good plan?
