I am in the process of upgrading my computer and was leaning towards a single video card versus SLI. I have seen a lot of recommendations for the 8800 GTS 512. I am currently running a 21" CRT but plan on upgrading after summer to a 24" LCD, probably the Dell 2408. Will this card have the umph to run at the 1920 x 1200 native resolution for games (BF2142, etc)? Or should I just get the 9800GTX or 8800GTX?

Thanks,

Gixxer

I have a OCed 8800GT and run most games at 1920x1200 so the GTS should be fine. You won't always be able to max all settings but you can definitely get a good balance.

Neither of the GTX's will offer big performance gains over a GTS so the choice reallly comes down to cash on hand. 8800 GTX remains stronger for memory bandwidth games, but the other two cards will perform well at 1920x1200.

Regarding the monitor, I just bought one and love it. I'm running it with 9800 GTX's in SLI.

There was an old thread that talked about this, gaming at 1920x1200 with an 8800GT. Link is http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=31&threadid=2170870

Most people said they did fine with the 8800GT, the GTS 512 is a little better than the GT, so if they gamed fine, the GTS should not have much of a problem either. I'm a little apprehensive about upgrading too, 1280x1024 still on a 17" LCD. Might upgrade to a 24" but I'm quite happy with the FPS I get at this resolution for the time being lol.

I gamed just fine on my 24" with my old X1900 GT. I can't imagine newer hardware would have any trouble.

I have both Dell 2408 and 8800gts 512.
Crysis and FSx are the only games that basically have brought my rig to its knee.
Get the later gen v/c if you could wait a tad longer.

yea, wait 10 weeks for next gen cards (less for reviews), if nothing new falls into your budget, at least the video cards will be cheaper. Next gen ATi cards are supposed to be better than g92 and the dual gpu card should be better than 9800gx2.

I would say most games right now perform fine with the 8800GT, with the exception of Crysis.

If not, drop res. It's no big deal. I use 1680 when necessary. Don't get caught up in the native res hype unless you're really picky. IMO it's impossible to keep up on video, so why try n break the bank.

Even with 1680x1050, Crysis still brings the rig to its knee as long as the AF is turned on.
medium settings with AF off do make the game more playable but then you defeat the purpose of using the big display in which we 24" owners paid dearly for.

I don't have any problems with it at 1920x, most of the games I play at max settings also.
