I should pipe up here and say that one major befit in getting a 3870 is the vivo functionality.

I'm pretty sure there STILL isn't a single NVidia partner with an 8 series vivo solution.
I'm not 100% sure because it's one of those 'Googles' that you can never get pure results for.

Being involved with NVidia as you are, I wonder if you have any idea why this is the case.

It really annoys me because they included some fantastic hardware accelerated vivo related functionailty into the GPU.

It was a similar story with the 6 and 7 series but at least a couple of vendors put out vivo flavors.

I like this - sounds catchy!

Definitely the best term for the situation, but I didn't invent it.

Kind of like DAAMIT - it's very appropriate.

Gets better. I had to explain how an ATI 9800 series card doesn't have the oomph for modern gaming, yet an nvidia 8800 series card which PRECEEDS the yet to come 9800 'level' nvidia card does. "But ATI already has 9800 gigaherz cards! I got mine last year."

I look forward to the 9600/9800 cards due to drop into our laps. With the general public conditioned to CPU PR numbers from different manufacturers signaling equivalent performance there will be a fun time to be had by all.

I just noticed EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Video Card - 320MB GDDR3 for $119.99 after $30 MIR. I was looking for info about 320MB vs. 512MB when I found this post. I have a 19" Viewsonic LCD monitor that runs at native rez of 1280x1024, I'm thinking that 320MB should be fine.

Here is the linky.

After rechecking the link I don't see where it is the new GTS model w/92 chip. Also found that Newegg has it $5 cheaper.

I am looking for a Dx 10 part to replace a 7950GT. I play WOW. So, would this card be worth getting?

320MB GTSes aren't G92, IIRC, only 512MB versions

although not sure if you'd care at that rez

Frame buffer is only about 10mb even at 1920x1200. It doesn't matter. The vast majority of VRAM is for textures and polygons etc.

So, I need a video card. I play half life 2: orange box, and would like to play crysis.

I typically don't care about the 'waiting to order since something new is about to come out' but from what I understand a new nvidia product is coming out literally in about 4 days.

I decided to go ahead and get an 8800 and I'll just buy a second for cheap once prices come down from this 'new' card. The only issue is apparently:

8800 GTS (512mb) > 8800 GT > 8800 GTS (320mb/640mb)

(I think)..

This crap with nvidia's naming system (on top of the rumor that the 9800 is nothing but sli 8800 which should be an 8850 or 8950 NOT a 'new gen' card) has made me consider buying ati.. Which is saying a lot since I've been an absolute diehard nvidia (bfg tech) fan since the whole< ATI 8500 driver fiasco.

So.... go ahead and get an 8800 GTS 512mb, wait and see what happens in a week, or buy an ATI card?

That ticked me off too which was much more like a fiasco than 8800WTF but I do think they should have called the 512's 8900. I guess it's just a marketing ploy for the uninformed.

I don't really get the marketing thing. What did they have to gain by naming it with an old name? Why not GTP or GTN or something?

They're quite a bit cheaper than that nowadays. The MSI one on Newegg is $195 after rebate, and comes with a game too.

Of course, the GT is correspondingly cheaper as well, but given that the price difference is only about $30, I think it's worth it to get a GTS instead.
