I am interested in getting a new 875p / 865pe mobo when they are ready, mostly for performance and price reasons. Newegg currently has MSI's offering for about $125. Now, i know that dual channel ddr266 provides the perfect amount of bandwidth for the 533fsb p4s (i have one) and i currently have 2 sticks of ddr333 (one stick samsung, one stick crucial). My question is, can i overclock the fsb while leaving my memory at default speeds? I know my ram probably wont overclock so well, so can i just up the fsb untill it can take advantage of dual ddr333, or 5.4 gb/s? Hope this makes sense :)

Thanks,
Dave

EDIT: My cpu is a 2.53 p4 SL6EG, which i believe is a c1 stepping. Any chance this baby will reach 166 fsb? That would bring my clockspeed up to roughly 3.154ghz! EDIT: I have one stick of crucial pc2700, and one stick of samsung pc2700, can i mix them in a springdale / caterwood board?

you would be running a 667MHz FSB, or DDR333x2

yes, you can probably do this on an enthusiast board with good overclock and tweaking options, but there would be no way of guaranteeing it to work. if your processor can handle it there's a good chance the board can.

From what I've seen and heard, 533MHZ P4's have trouble on anything above 165FSB.

I've heard that about the Asus P4C800, not any other board so far.

Nope so far the Asus boards dont look good but those new msi boards look ok,expecialy the cheap 865 ones. :)

Here's a link to a review of a MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R .

Now if we can only get 865 reviews up.

The Epox 875P has a whopping +.05 Vcore range.

This is why I wait to get a new board to see what looks good. I can't believe I'm saying this, but MSI 875/865 is looking pretty darn good right now.

I have ordered this board & I too have the same ram , 1X Samsung pc2700 512 megs & 1X Crucial pc2700 512 megs.

If you can wait till next week I will tell you for sure if it works.

My guess is it will work just fine at 1:1 (ddr266),this way I can up the fsb.

Ok I got my board today MSI 865PE NEO2-LS P4/FSB 800/DDR400/8X AGP/SATA/A&L/ATX Motherboard . :D

A few things I noticed,the board undervolts a little bit;if set in bios at 1.55 i get 1.52 . ;)

As for mixing samsung pc2700 & crucial pc2700,you have to set the ram speed in bios to 1:1 (DDR266) or it will only crash or lockup if you use DDR333 as should be. I dont know why but it does that.

I tried setting the cas manualy to 2.5 3 3 7 but still cant get it to boot at DDR333 ram with fsb at 133mhz.

So butch84 yes your ram will work fine with this board.

the news isnt all bad,if i set my ram to DDR266 (1:1) i can then overclock the fsb no problem all the way up to 166mhz so i dunno what's up with the ram not wanting to do it when fsb is at 133.

Just installed XP on it & so far it looks good.

I will say more if something else comes up.

Ok small update,

I was able to boot with fsb to 133 and ram at 166mhz but it took 2.9V on the ram,I dont feel cofortable with such a high mem voltage. :(

I guess this board is picky when use in Dual channel ram,btw this ram did up to 190mhz at 2.5 3 3 7 with 2.6v in my P4B533 .

edit: 1 more thing, this board shows my cpu almost 20C MORE than my P4B533 setup.so dont freak when you see high temps with this board. ;)

hey budman, thanks for the update :) Sounds like mixing memory make work out for me, and im thinking of going for the Abit IC7. As far as setting your ram to 166, im not sure the problem is related to mixing memory. i seem to remember others mentioning that they had the same problem with mathced memory. I think it may be a chipset / bios issue.

Thanks again,
butch
