I also agree with this....:D

8600Ultra does look very nice.

I think I'll be holding out for the 65nm "G80". It's a while off yet, but my 7900GT is doing fine for now. But if the benches show the 8600U favorably, then I will be recommending it to one of my buds. He wants to upgrade from a 6800GT.

There are all the other average reasons to go for one.
Such as what?

Weren't you one of the ones calling DX9 "useless" when the R9700 cards were released?

I'm not saying DX10 support isn't a great feature. I'm just interested in this apparent flip-flop.

On paper, the 8600 Ultra doesn't look any better than what I have in my rig right now. Sure, it supports DX10, but big deal? By the time the first DX10 game is out, this thing will not even be able to run it, short of turning down most of the settings.

It is my opinion that you buy a DX10 under these two conditions

1) When the first DX10 AAA title is released

Or

2) When your DX9 performance sucks and you just want a faster card. Then you get DX10 as a freebie (with nVidia) but it doesn't really do any good.

But in any case there is absolutely no reason to purchase a DX10 card "solely" for the purpose of being able to play DX10 games 2 years from now. That is just silly, because in practice it never works.

Anyway, on a side note, the 8600 Ultra looks extremely similar to a 7950GT at this point. Great price for someone that is still in the dark ages, but for someone who has a 7XXX series, I don't think this is really a wise choice. Just my opinion at this point. We have not seen any benchmarks yet, so that could change everything.

What frames are you getting? I have the same card and am considering a 1600 x 1200 monitor, currently I have a 1280 x 1024 monitor.

Well from what I read some DX10 patches are suppose to be released for a couple DX9 games in march(COH is one of them). Granted it might not be a full blown DX10 game but you will need a DX10 card to put the extra features of the game to use. So going DX10 right now ain't a total waste.

Far Cry, FEAR, COD2, Prey, all get at least 30fps at 1600x1200. Only certain levels of AA/AF will cause the frame rate dipping below 30, depending on the game of course.

DX9 performance?? Hello???

Weren't you one of the ones calling DX9 "useless" when the R9700 cards were released?

You mean when there were only 1 or 2 (if that many) games that barely even began to use DX9 features??

I'm not saying DX10 support isn't a great feature. I'm just interested in this apparent flip-flop.

There is no flip flop. The words "apparent" and "sickbeast" should never be seen together. I'm saying you could consider 8600's just for their DX9 performance alone, much like you could have considered DX8 performance at the time the 9700's came out.. Don't even have to consider DX10 right now. That is still a good ways off, and by that time, new stuff will be out. Thats why I said I'd like to wait for the 65nm stuff before I consider buying an 8 series or other.

What I'm interested in, is where you get this stuff?

My memory. When Rollo was here, you and him both used to go on about how DX9 was "useless" (before Far Cry was released). You just acknowledged it, why do you even need to ask?

The thing was, it *was* a very useful feature, seeing as games that could use it were just around the corner, very similar to the current situation with DX10.

I don't appreciate your accusatory PMs and rude posting style toward me.

The only thing I can't stand about you is the rabid fanboyism. You've been like that since you started posting here.

ArchAngel777 needs to wake up and smell the coffee here.

Simply put......CRYSIS.

Full DX10 and it comes out later this year (Q3). So DX10 games are NOT and I repeat, NOT 2 years away.

I hope next-gen midrange cards sports 512MB video memory as standard. Even at a measly resolution of 1024x768, triple-buffered Oblivion with 4096x4096 texture packs and HDR + 4xAA + 16x AF is killing my poor X1800XT's 512MB memory.

The 8600 ultra seems a bit too good to be true, twice the memory bandwidth, twice the memory, faster gpu/mem clocks, more shaders.... and only 30 bucks more then the 8600gt? Seems like a pipe dream.

You and I must be on different planets then. Zebo said it perfectly. It was obvious to him what I was talking about. Why wasn't it obvious to you? And, unbelievably, you bring up Rollo YET AGAIN!!! You need to make peace with it my friend. Rollo can be found at GeForce3D right here. Do me a favor and go and register, discuss things with Rollo, and let it die. OMFG..

I don't like the smell of coffee... Actually, I do... Mmmm

Ok, well anyway, I am well aware of this game you call Crysis. In fact, I'd been following the company long before they were even a company! Imagine that paradox. It was just Yerli brothers. Anyway, the game is not a full DX10 game. Sure, it has some of the features but that is besides the point. Besides, Q3 release date? Release dates are about as reliable as a powerball ticket when it comes to having the correct "number". Another thing I would like to address is that there is no way in hell this card (8600 Ultra) is going to run Crysis with all the eye candy turned on, so it doesn't matter much. Personally, I think it will take nothing less than 8800GTX to enjoy the game.

I run away from the Nvidia fanboys here, why would I want to be surrounded by them?

Rollo was fun but a detriment to the boards here IMO.

Well, that's fine, but you're always bringing the guy up. I just thought you might need some closure or something.

His pwnage was my closure.

That said, a chat with him might be alright. He'll probably ban me for fun. :)

I just hope this isn't another small step up, like going from a 6800 Ultra (AGP) to 7600 GT (PCIe). I bought the 7600 mainly to get into the modern times with PCIe, but it honestly wasn't too big, if any of an upgrade. I sold that card and bought a 7900 GT, which I've been using since June. I'd much like to buy an 8600 Ultra (my birthday's in March, how convenient!), but I just pray that I gain *something* aside from DX10 capabilities. Also -- UT2007 is a DX9 game, like how UT2004 was a DX8 game correct?
