But if the motherboard cannot support 8X AGP card.

This is not unique to the Albatron boards.

The i845 (D,E,G,GE,PE) chipset does not support AGP8x. Anyway, AGP8x does not exhibit any realworld advantages over AGP4x.

I'm somewhat ignorant about this, but I remember when AGP 4x came out, people said it had no realworld advantages over AGP 2x. Does this still hold true? If so, why even bother with AGP 8x?

Those boards do not support 8x cards BUT any 8x card should still work in most of them just at 4x. So far all benchmarks done show there really isnt much gained in the boards that DO support 8x and actualy run the card at that speed. I remember however reading something from Carmack that said Doom 3 would take advantage of 8x and that was enough for me. 🙂 I realize that the pe chipset does not support 8x operation and by teusday I should know if my 9700 works in the Abit BE7 Raid at 4x. Will keep ya all updated and give a mini review if it works!

David has not written back. its been 24hrs now.

Well I stess tested my system using Prime95 for five hours with one error. This is at 150fsb 1.775 vcore in bios, 1.71 actual with XMS2700 at 2.5,3,3,7 and everything else at default. Don't know if the temp got too high, which caused the error. The highest temp reported during that time on sensor 1 was 49C (avg 41C) and on sensor 3 was 56C (avg 45C). Does anyone know if those temps would be high enough to cause a P95 error or do I need to look at reducing my fsb by a notch or so?

MadTom, it might be the memory bothering the reboot process as you suggested. I think I was able to run it can run up to 133fsb at SPD for 354DDR.

I think the reboot problem is the "feature" they have that restores your bios to default, instead of stopping you from booting. I don't like this at all & will email to ask them to set this as an option in the bios.

I think that my memory is holding me back with the 1.9a & this board. From my testing, I'm pretty sure the chip will go further. I have gone up to 152fsb, but was messing around with the reboot problem & didn't stress test at that speed.

Currently, I'm at 150fsb, DDR400, 2.7GHz, 38C, vcore 1.57-1.63 (set at 1.65 in bios) w/ Sisoft mem score of 2871.

So far, I'm pleased with the board. If I could get the reboot thing fixed, I'd LOVE the board 🙂

The Radeon 9700 does work fine with this board. I havent had any problems with that combination at all so far, though Ive only run a few loops of 3dM2k1 and some UT2003. It does have some quirks though, most irritating is that it will only allow 2.66 and 1.5 memory multipliers for 100fsb processors. Wish they would fix that...

His response to the lockups was to say and I quote verbatim "You should buy a Gigabyte motherboard" I said "what?!?!?!". He went on to explain that the board does not work with 8x cards and that the ATI card was plauged with problems, I then told him it worked flawlessly with my old soyo board (except for Medieval Total War which was fixed with the latest beta drivers). He was kind enough to send me the beta bios (v1.2) but it did not solve the problem.

Specs
PX845PEV New
Intel 2.26b New
3200 Corsair Extreme DDR New
Fresh Install of XP Pro
ATI Radeon 9700 2 weeks old Vesion: 6.13.10.6193 Drivers (worked flawlessly on my old Soyo Dragon +)
All the Intel Chipset drivers that came with the Motherboard
Creative SB Live (default XP drivers, tried different pci slots also to make sure this wasnt the problem)
Hardware manager shows everthing as a-ok
All default settings although once lockups started I did try higher voltage on the agp port to no avail. Tried defaul mb settings and performance, messed with the apature size.

All 3d games and benchmarks lock within the first 4 seconds.

I will never buy another Albatron product, sell them in my store or recommend them to anyone and not because of the problem but because of the response to the problem. RMA has been issued. Buy an Nvidia card or Gigabyte motherboard, what the fu#k kind of reply is that?!?! We are aware of the problem and are going to fix it or something to that effect would have been acceptable not go buy something else but I guess I will take that advice after all.

Mianoumi

PS I just took out the Live card and enabled the onboard audio to no avail, lock within 2 seconds. Dredd if I am correct you have the pro version which would make you different then me and this other guy correct? If so what is the difference? Doesnt really matter I guess as I am completly turned off by this company and the rma has already been issued.

Hey EVAN, any chance you could test with a 9700, I mean after all it is the premier video card on the market right now (at least for the next couple months).

Whoever sayd that is full of crap. Damnit...I hate idiots that take one problem and blow it up to seem like it's the norm! Damnit I have the PX845PEV Pro right here running a 9700Pro and not a damn problem.

Please don't tell me it's albatron's fault or ATI's fault that it works for me and others and NOT YOU! You got a flaky one no doubt about it.

So what if I have the Pro and you don't why not go Pro? what stops you from spending $90 on the Pro version that was reviewed here?

Mwave has the ALBATRON PX845PE PRO2 for $134 shipped...WOOHOO!!
Don't need the serial ata or the audio, but do need the raid ports & the LAN.
Anyone got this board?
It seems like the majority of people that have the 845PE Pro are liking it, yes?
I hope the ProII will be as good.

Dude, mellow out. One, two people here have the same exact problem so its not just me. Two, I was asking you about the pro or not because if we have different mb's then that might be the cause, whatever you think I am trying to figure out what the problem is and have tried many things to fix it, I want this to work. Third, I was told by THEIR hired employee that it didnt work Im not just pulling this outa thin air. BTW, I do have the pro, wasnt listed as such on the manual cover but said so on the side of the box.

Believe me my attitude would be much different had I gotten different answers from the company. I have a huge file of fixes to try from ATI and am halfway through so far, if I get it working I will let everyone know.

It's allmost 3 days now and still no reply from David, like I said I didnt think I would ever hear from him again even though he said he would find out what was going on, we shall see.

well i had the Albatron board but after days of unsuccessfully getting my 9700 to run with it, i picked up the Asus p4pe. installed it last night, just hit 14470 on 3dmark with my P4 1.8a. no problems whatsoever with my 9700 - other then a few overly aggressive attempts to hit 150 fsb 🙂 with my chip.

not sure what the prob was with my Albatron board, it ran my Geforce 3 in the same set up no prob. it just wouldnt let me 9700 run at default clock speeds without immediately locking up.

thanks for all the great feedback, thankfully a new motherboard was the first change I made and it worked. turned out my radeon and power supply were fine. obviously the 9700 does work on some Albatron boards but the 9700 is quite fickle.

it is a nice value board though and i may keep it around for my backup system.

thanks again for all of your help, time to tweak my Asus some more, love to hit 15000 on 3dmark.

EDIT: after a few tweaks just hit 15034 🙂 next stop, steady 150 fsb (hopefully) - thanks again Dredd for that ocing primer, im putting it to good use!!

This 9700 problem is quite troubling. Has anyone else besides this one guy talked to Albatron tech support about this? I just ordered an Albatron PEV Pro, should I RMA it back as soon as I get it? Damnit! =/

So far in this thread 2 people have it working just fine and 2 dont. If you like you can try calling them yourself and see what kind of response you get.

Another wierd thing I have found in my testing is that I cant get the cas settings to save at all, if I set it to 2 when I save and reboot any memory settings are back to default. I don't know if this happened with the default bios that shipped with the board but it does happen with the beta bios (v1.2) David sent me.

As for ocing it is rock solid stable at 163 (most likely cpu limited) and the memory setting at turbo (2.66) which is some insane ddr speed and gives me sandra marks almost identical to 1066 rdram, corsair rocks.

In hopes of helping the one other guy here (and any other who may end up with problems) who cant get his going I am going to post the fixes ATI sent me, I only got halfway through them before RTCW called and I threw my old 8500 back in so I could play, hopefully will try the rest tonight.

Thank you for contacting ATI Customer Service Canada.

Mianoumi I've been losing my bios info when rebooting @ 150 fsb, although the computer will run Prime95 for five hours before I get an error at this speed. Moving the fsb down a couple of notches resolved the problem, now Prime95 can run twice as long before I end it 🙂

I'm pretty sure my problem is my memory. I'm running Corsair XMS2700. I've underclocked my memory & gotten to 152FSB on the processor. At 152fsb, I had a Promise ATA/100 IDE card in a PCI slot. This card caused system instability unless I upped the core voltage. I think I could have moved the fsb up higher if I had figured out the Promise card was the culprit. However, I didn't & installed Win XP SP1. I'm pretty sure that Win XP SP1 reduced my ability to overclock! Also something caused my Sisoft memory benchmark scores to go down at 150fsb!! The score at 150fsb was 3048, not it's about 300 points less... I can only figure that Win XP SP1 is the cause 🙁

The problem is related to the NON Pro version. So far everyone I talked to with the PEV Pro and the 9700Pro have no trouble. The Non Pro version has a bit of a hickup somewhere.

Ah, this makes me feel much better. I was very concerned, because I plan on getting a 9700pro around xmas. You guys are great, thanks.

Mianoumi, what brand of 9700pro did your purchase? Was it oem or retail? Have you tried your 9700pro in any other m/bs to determine if it's indeed the m/b with the problem? Have you tried the latest bios version?

Foamfoot, I believe was the first guy to mention a conflict between the 9700pro and the albatron m/b. I looked back and he mentioned that he had a "Powercolor" ati 9700pro. This is a different brand, I wonder if this why some 9700's seem to work and others do not. Has anyone contacted ATI directly about the conflict and problems?

yes it was a powercolor but it was the standard ati board; ati hsf and all. the only thing powercolor did was take the board ati gave them and ship it out in a nice case. i believe most 3rd part companies are only now starting to roll out their versions.

i did not contact Albatron because i was not sure it was my motherboard until i installed my Asus late on Friday. and prior to that my geforce 3 ran fine in the Albatron. im not sure the albatron is "defective" per se but obviously there's something "not perfect" about some of the albatron boards as shipped. and from what ive read at rage3d, the 9700 apparently needs a finely tuned set-up to run properly. the smallest issue can cause problems.

do you think its worth contacting them? ill gladly send them an email tomorrow stating that i could not run the 9700 on their board and that when i switched to the Asus with the EXACT same set-up everything ran great.

Retail ATI Radeon 9700. Yes I had the 9700 working rock solid stable in my old Soyo SY-K7V DRAGON Plus. My second to last message has the e-mail from ATI who I called on Friday trying to figure out the problem.

Mianoumi

PS One other odd thing, I came in this morning and my Nostromo n50 controller wasnt working in my front usb port even though it was last night, I had to plug it into a new port to get it working again.

This really sucks. Should I RMA my albatron back as soon as I get it? I just checked googlegear.com, and they have the new Abit BE7 (845PE) for only $110. Abit is a good m/b brand from what I've heard. I haven't seen anyone review the abit, but their other boards have been top overclockers in the past. It would be nice if Evan reviewed this one too.

I emailed Evan about the 9700pro issue and asked what his thoughts were on the compatability...

Email from Evan:

"It depends on the particular Radeon 9700 you have. There's absolutely no issues that I've seen with the latest Radeon 9700 video cards (and drivers) and Albatron's 845PE boards. This isn't true of ATI's Radeon 9700 cards from over a month ago. Honestly, it also could be user error as well. But don't worry, it has nothing to do with the Albatron board itself."

How old are the Ati cards that are not working with the Albatron? I also emailed dr.pro@albatron.com.tw. He seems to be their head tech support guy and promises quick turnaround on problems on their web site. I will update on his response monday.

My 9700 is about 3 weeks old and works 100% in my board with the 6193 drivers. I even have it overclocked. I don't know why people seem to have trouble with things and when I build the same setup and probably don't do the most perfect install (i cut corners with the OS etc) and get NO PROBLEMS. I'm at a loss...people said that the GF3 had issues with the SB Live and I had none, ATI Radeon 9700Pro not working on some mobo/PSU and I have no issues even at a good overclock.

Honestly, it also could be user error as well. But don't worry, it has nothing to do with the Albatron board itself

I don't see how Evan can say this without actually having my board in his hands, it could very well be the MB that is the problem.

I've tested the exact same model you have in your hands for many hours with both a Ti4600 and a Radeon 9700 and encountered no issues. Could it be that you got a bad board? Possibly. But as a Motherboard Editor who's tested hundreds of motherboards, I can say for a fact that I haven't received a completely dead motherboard before, and I've only very rarely RMAed defective boards in the past.

User error (especially among users who haven't installed many motherboards before) is the cause of the vast majority of problems these days. For example, if you're handling a motherboard and aren't wearing an ESD strap or don't consistently touch some type of grounded piece of metal (it has to be grounded), then you've more than likely zapped your board in one form or another. The human body carries a lot voltage, more than enough to zap the components on your motherboard.

In other words, an inexperienced user will make these mistakes, and no one but the user is responsible for any problems that may arise as a result.
