845PE 2.4 @ 3Ghz or NForce 2 1.47 @ 2.3Ghz ???

I am trying to decide between the following(note I have a Radeon 9700 that OCs to 9700pro speeds)

P4 2.4 @ 3Ghz (~400+mhz memory & c1 stepping)
845PE motherboard(Albatron most likely)

Athlon XP 1700+ running at ~2.3Ghz(jiuhb - that's like XP3000+++ is it not?)
Abit NF7-S or Epox 8RDA+ (a1 / c1 stepping)

Now, you'd think the AMD system is cheaper, but no necessarily by much. With the Intel setup I can use the stock cooler. I would get a $25 cooler on the AMD side.

Also with the AMD/nforce 2 I would get TWO 256MB PC3200 DIMMS ahile the P$ I could use 1 512MB stick which can be a little cheaper. Also the AMD motherboards are more expensive than the 845pe albatron.. I want the nforce 2 a1/c1 stepping which requires me to spend extra for guarantees of that.

Total cost for each of my setups currently:

Intel: $366

AMD: $330

Ok, so $36 difference? Which on will be faster(if I achieve my OCing goals)? Which one more stable?

What si your opinion?

Thanks

First off, I don't have any experience with the AMD T-bred's, so I can't tell you much about them... It'll all depend on what you're going to use the system for... Though I heard the T-bred system would be faster for gaming, etc...

As far as P4 system you're thinking to put together, you'll have to remember that NOT ALL 2.4B's will hit 3+GHz mark (even for C1's). Also, I highly suggest that you use better cooling solution than stock HSF if you're going to hit 3+ speed with 2.4B. It seems (to me, at least) that AMD chips are lot easier to oc right now. If you're sticking to P4, I'd suggest getting SL6S2 2.53GHz chips rather than 2.4B's...

1) o'cing is no guarantee, I have 3x 1700+ stepping 0250, 0302, 0311. And the result is 1.7ghz, 2.03ghz and 2.13ghz. I am talking about totally stable. So take ur chance.
2) for the heatsink, I use stock, home made and slk800a. And I can tell u that the diff MAYBE 2 degree the most.
3) you don't NEED 2x of ram on nf2 board, at least I can't talk the diff between single and dual.
4) When AMD is over 2.2ghz and P4 over 2.8ghz, I really question if you can tell any diff between them. At least I can't tell the diff between my 2.13ghz 1700+ and my 2.35ghz 2100+.

It is all personal perf about AMD and Intel, they are equally good.

Well for all practical purposes let's assume we hit 3Ghx, and 2.3Ghz for these chips.

Also note I am doing this for 3D gaming purposes. Is there a difference? You betcha. In certain games even without eye candy the FPS can get pretty low. Medal of Honor is one of them. So I want some speed. I have experience with the 2.4 @ 3Ghz, and successfully got one(C1) to hit it no problem but the other was a problem, but it was a different stepping and the memory used was not bad.

As for using 2 sticks i an nforce2, it does make a difference as it is dual chanel and using 2 sticks improve memory performance which does help gaming performance.

I expected a mixed response. I am just curious which setup would be faster..

Thanks for th ehelp

Comparison a 2800+ (2.25Ghz) to a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz. The only catch is that they used 850E vs NForce2.
Sometimes, the difference is very small. If there is a *, the difference is more than 5%.
Pentium 4 : faster at Quake3*, Commanche, mp3 Maker Platinum*, Lightwave*.
Athlon XP : faster at Unreal Tournament 2003, lame 3.92, DivX encoding, Mpeg-2 Encoding*, Cinema 4D XL*, 3D Studio Max, Spec Viewperf*.

Thanks for the link. Interestingly the memory performance of the 850E is quite a bit higher than the 845PE... I will try to find some benchmarks to compare. This memory performanc drop could be significant in a lot of instances, especially gaming..

Goodluck on finding a 2.4B that'll do 3GHZ rock stable. You have a better chance going to outpost.com and getting a OEM 2.53 VID C1, which does 3.4GHZ+.

a lot of 2.4b's will do 3+ rock solid.

So be it, maybe I will go for the 2.53.. It isn't that much more so maybe not a bad deal. But I have read of and personally experienced a 2.4 doing 3Ghz.. Yeah it is a crapshoot, but craps' odds are nearly 50%.. I think the 2.4 (C1) to 3 is better than that..

Thanks fo everyone's input!
