I am interested in a P4 DDR mobo. If anyone could direct me to a review of either of these 2 boards, I would appreciate it.

<< Odd, the review linked here the other day for the MSI i845-D mobo said it had USB 2.0. ?? >>

Its a generic link for the chipset. It also says its only ATA 33/66. Basically not much usefull info. The pictures show a box that says USB 2.0 and ATA 133 and the last picture shows a manual for RAID. Also has onboard audio.

Man, how long have I been asleep. I didn't even know the Intel DDR boards were out.

If you look at the picture it has the word "Optional" in big red letters above the RAID and USB 2.0 listing.

thought the P4 DDR boards wouldn't be out this fast, so I am about to buy KR7A w/ XP1800.

Now I am not so sure about my upgrade plan when I heard this :frown:

Intel has a contract with Rambus to push their technology through the end of 2001 (because Intel was getting kickbacks from Rambus and lots of stock). Manufacturer's have been getting ready to release their Intel i845 based chipsets which support DDR memory. VIA and SiS already have been selling chipsets which support P4's and DDR memory.

There some info at DDR-Memory.com on DDR motherboards.

I bought a Soyo K7VDRAGON+ last week, it screams with the AMD Athlon XP 1900+. It got the best review of any current DDR motherboard over at Tom's Hardware.

I'm assuming that the i845D boards won't be all that different from the i845 boards, so here comes the necessary question:

Do any of you have an i845 board, and would you recommend it? I have trouble deciding which i845D board to go with, but I need one relatively soon because this Abit BH6 (yes I know, it's a dinosaur by now) is reaching the end of its life cycle. I'm barely leaning towards the Asus board, but I've heard a few complaints about it, and have known people that have had problems with Asus boards in the past as well. I know that they usually get excellent reviews but what I'm really interested in is real-world experiences with those boards.

I guess I could also check out Abit, but I'm not really in favor of Abit boards seeing as how a few of my friends and I had problems with the BH6 in the longrun. I kinda wish Tyan would have an i845D board, but it'd probably cost $921414234 or something. Any suggestions?

if you need a 845D board soon, you should automatically rule out ABIT, they are always the last one's out, for they try to make sure that their boards are 100% stable (and fairly OC-able).

In my experience I have only used ASUS, ABIT, & Intel Motherboards. I have NEVER had any problems. I also think that if you search the web the general consensus is that ASUS & ABIT are prob the 2 best board manufacturers out there.

I have just tried a MSI board for they were the first to release a nForce board & their reviews as of late had been very good. So far I am more than impressed. I would definately buy an MSI board again.

(the reason i mention MSI is for the availability of their 845D board @ newegg.)

Just my 2 cents

Hey, thanks Paazel - I'll definitely look into the MSI. I guess I have a couple weeks to make my decision, since I'm getting a P4 1.8ghz for Xmas so I can't build it until the 25th anyway =)

Hopefully before then there will be a bunch of reviews up that will help me decide once and for all.

Oh man oh man

I was all set for an AMD system and now this comes out!

Picked up DDR 2100 256MB RAM on the best buy deal for $25 so thought I was locked into AMD. Now I learn I'm not.

What to do?

Totaly unfamiliar with recent Intel world:

1. Will these boards run cheap Celerons or are they limited to $160+ P4 chips.

2. Will these boards work with my DDR 2100 ram or do they use a specer DDR ram?

Leaning towards the Gigabyte board over the MSI as I have no desire to overclock but am very concerned about stability.

Thanks!

I just got the Gigabyte yesterday (from newegg). I will be slapping it together tonight.
I'm moving in a 1.8Ghz P4 with 2 sticks of Crucial 256MB (from Bestbuy).

If all goes well, it will be a good week.
:)

I am up and running with the Gigabyte DDR setup (Newegg). I've been running linux for about 3 hours. An hour of which
was playing Quake3 online. So far I'm happy with it. The Gigabyte seems to be a solid board. It also has a dual
BIOS. Hopefully it will help if I screw it up when I flash it.

Now I need to find a Lite-On 32X burner....

Actually, come Dec. 17 the flood will begin, although Intel's official release won't be until the first of the year.

<< 2. Will these boards work with my DDR 2100 ram or do they use a specer DDR ram? >>

Works with PC1600 & 2100.

As for which board is "best", the usual suspects ...

If you're not O/C'ing, Intel mobos are the best.

For O/C'ing, MSI and Asus rate the best IMHO, although Asus is getting less friendly towards O/C'ing and they have a knack for putting the P.S. connector in awkward location.
