840 Pro or 830?

Hi all,

Which one to get for 512Gb SSD?
proven 830 or new 840 Pro that costs more and many "bad" reports.

It depends on what matters to you. for example, money is important to me, I'd end up going with the cheaper option. What matters to you?
 
I've worried about "bad" test results of 840 Pro 512G that suppose to be fixed by newer firmware

how much I'll loose by going 830 vs 840 Pro?
will extra $100. get me better speed and etc for 840 Pro vs 830?
 
There was a bug in the review firmware of 840's and 840 Pro's which was fixed in the release firmware. There have been no reports of bugs in drives bought on general sale.

You will not notice any difference between the 830 or the 840 Pro outside of benchmarks.

Wow. Aren't we arrogant. Maybe $100 isn't a lot of money to you but it may be for somebody else.

The rest of your post is as idiotic as I would expect from you. Outside of benchmarks, which is the real question you would not see a difference.

And do you think that I have some emotional attachment to my 830? Do I take it out my PC and share my bed with it? Honestly. When I place works next big IT order in January I will be sneeking an 840 Pro in and slipping in my current 830 in exchange. I am all for upgrading but the facts remain that the 830 is proven while the 840 Pro is not and the 830 is $100 cheaper. If I am recommending a purchase to somebody else, you have to weigh up the options and not just gung-ho it like you do.

The funny thing about the bench you linked is that the 512gb 830 is slower than the 256gb 830....Anybody know why? I always thought the performance increased with size. Looks like the 256gb 830 is the fastest 830. Does the 840 line follow this trend also?
 
It's been a reasonably common theme that 256GB SSD's are faster than 512GB. The larger the SSD the faster it is gets ultimately to a point where the increased LBA's the controller has to keep track of and manage actually slows down the overall performance of the drive. As 64-256GB SSDs are the most common it's logical that the controllers cost to performance is targeted at those capacities and the controller slows down a bit when it has to manage twice as much NAND as the 256GB.
 
I personally went with the 840 Pro, but mostly because the 256gb 830s are quickly becoming impossible to find at a reasonable price.

The speeds are close enough to be comparable unless you are benchmarking the drive constantly.

There are three things I would consider:

- If you want to UEFI/Secure boot, there were limited cases where people reported issues running the 830 with GPT rather than MBR.

- The 840 Pro uses a smaller NAND die than the 830 which invariably will decrease it's lifespan when compared to the 830. Both will last longer than needed under anything but the heaviest of workloads.

- The 840 Pro can WRITE significantly faster. Now in general most people looking for a 512gb drive are wanting to use it to load games or applications in which case the write speed is largely irrelevant once everything is installed.

If none of those things matter to you, the 830 should be fine.

It's using older firmware which can't be updated, hence the results.

Does the 840 line follow this trend also?

512GB 840 Pro is actually slightly faster than 256GB model, I have one in the house.
 
If we're talking about these drives from the money aspect only?.. then there's surely something to be said about driving off the lot with a 2 year old car. Well.. off course it's going cheaper since the newer model just came out with a bigger engine and has more power than the old one did. Just have to figure what that extra power is worth to you, is all.

Benchmarks aside.. Anand's bench suite is one of the best out there and clearly shows the time that can be saved by using the newer drive over the old model. Just have to figure what that extra time is worth, is all.

Personally, I do ok financially and time savings figures into that quite heavily.. so I will generally always recommend newer models when the performance gain is substantial enough to warrant it. Not to mention that firmware improvements can be everything for an SSD. That workload comparison seems to point that out well enough for my dollar and I would rarely ever buy an outdated SSD that isn't even being manufactured anymore.
